Description:
Exeter: Flindell [Printer] Single sided printed broadside, approximately 175mm x 220mm in size, n.d. c.1820? Quite bright and clean. The full title is 'Wanted Immediately, Many Thousands, to Pay Off Old Scores and New Ones. For Which Purpose an Auction Will be Held of All That Inn Famous Concern, Situate in Bampfylde-Lane, at the Sign of the Great Cann, in the Parish of Spreyton, for Sale of the Undermentioned Live and Dead Stock'. The printer is probably Thomas Flindell fl. 1812-1824 (see BBTI). Relating mainly to local politicians ('Bampfylde-Lane' presumably relates to Sir Charles Warwick Bampfylde, an Exeter MP between 1796 and 1812), there is also a mention of 'a large lot of White Hats on dirty poles', which presumably relates to Henry Hunt who was famous for wearing a white hat. The individual disguised as, 'One Old Poltimore [a village in Devon] Cock, without spurs, having Chicken by various Hens', remains unknown to this cataloguer. First Edition. Unbound. Good+. 8vo. Broadside.

Description:
No Place: No Publisher Small archive, made up mainly of letters and printed ephemera relating to the British philanthropist Frank Harcourt-Munning, the lead administrator of the charity 'War on Want'. 'War on Want' grew out of the 'Association for World Peace', which had been created in 1950 by the publisher Victor Gollancz in support of overseas development. The AWP created a committee, chaired by the Labour MP and future Prime Minister Harold Wilson, which published a report entitled 'War on Want - A Plan for World Development', which advocated global development as a bulwark against communism and war. When Frank Harcourt-Munning (a wealthy Christian socialist) took over as administrator and began to invest significant amounts of resources 'War on Want' emerged as an NGO, and then became a charity in 1959. The archive includes ten typed signed letters / notes from Harold Wilson (as Prime Minister) on 10 Downing Street letterheaded paper to Harcourt-Munning…

London: W. T. Sherwin [1], 2-15pp, [1], disbound. Lightly browned, lightly foxed and stained. Sherwin's reprint of Southey's disavowed poem. Southey, by the time this early poem was published, was Poet Laureate, and the anti-royal tone struck many as seditious. Hazlitt, in Leigh Hunt's 'The Examiner', excoriated Southey, contrasting his early radicalism with his current servility (see Hoadley, 'The Controversy Over Southey's Wat Tyler', in 'Studies in Philology', Vol. 38, No. 1, 1941. This Sherwin reprint is one of many printed by radicals, including Hone, after Sherwood, Neely, and Jones had, despite triumphing against Southey's attempt to suppress the poem, decided to withdraw their edition from sale. The final page is a notice that the 'Republican' which "would be more generally read if its title was changed; and I know that there are many, who agree with the principle, but who actually are afraid of a paper, bearing such a name, being found…

No Place: No Publisher Single sided printed broadside, approximately 400mm x 385mm in size, no publisher or place but see below, n.d. but probably early 1918. Browned, chipped to edges with some loss, a few small tears, slightly creased from having been folded in four, with many closed tears to folds to reverse. The text is written from a nationalist perspective, asking why British troops should fight for other countries' war aims, "If the Frenchies really must have Alsace-Lorraine, very well, let them fight for it and good luck to them! ... Must our British lads really further risk their skins for such far-fetched aims? Why not let all these other people attend to their own fighting ... why ask our British lads to pluck these hot chestnuts from the fire for them?". A rare and elaborate example of First World War German aerial propaganda which was dropped over British troops on the Western Front. Not found in JISC, but there is a copy in the Imperial War Museum (from where the…
