London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Livingston, 1887. Second edition of volume I, first edition of volume II; 2 volumes 8vo, pp. xvi, [2], 316; viii, [2], 318; mounted albumen frontispiece portrait by H. S. Mendelssohn, folding map printed in color, 20 wood-engraved plates, plus other wood engravings in the text; slightly later full green crushed levant, gilt monogram of Henry Arthur Johnstone, and gilt tools, exposed sewing thongs at inner corners of covers, t. e.g., pigskin endpapers with Johnstone's nautical ex-libris stamped in brown on the front free endpaper and dated 1899; light rubbing at extremities, all else near fine. The library of Henry Arthur Johnstone, which contained a large proportion of books on natural history, was sold en bloc to the London bookseller Clements in 1921, and thence dispersed. Mendelssohn I, p. 812-3: "The work is an important contribution to the history of exploration in South-Equatorial Africa, and contains an excellent account of the physical features of these regions, and of their fauna, inhabitants, &c."
