Very good copy of one of two volumes on West African ornithology from Sir William Jardine's ambitious Victorian series The Naturalist's Library

Birds of Western Africa, William Swainson, Vol. II, 34 steel plates by William Lizars after illustrations by William Swainson, 32 hand-coloured, plus hand-coloured frontis and engraved portrait of French explorer Francois Levaillant

With list of volumes (up to Vol. XIX), half title, frontispiece portrait of Levaillant, hand coloured vignette title page with ring-necked parakeets, two title pages, advertisement 2pp, contents 6pp, memoir of Levaillant, text 263pp and 32 hand-coloured plates

Sir William Jardine (1800-1874) was a Scottish naturalist. He is best known for writing and editing the 40-volume series of natural history books, The Naturalist's Library from 1833 to 1866. "In addition to the description and depiction (mostly finely coloured plates) by various well-known contributors to almost the whole range of the subject, the series is supplemented by biographies of famous naturalists of all times and all countries. It is well described as a remarkable little library of early nineteenth zoology, as well as a brief account of the lives of the chief zoologists of all time." (Casey Wood)

William John Swainson (1789-1855), was an English ornithologist, malacologist, conchologist, entomologist, and artist. He wrote and illustrated many zoological books including Zoological Illustrations 1829, Fauna Boreali-Americana 1831, three volumes of the Naturalist's Library on Birds of Western Africa 1837 and Flycatchers 1840, Exotic Conchology 1841, etc.

Original brown cloth binding sunned, amateurishly rebacked with brown tape and original gilt title reapplied, original green endpapers, but book block solid, many text pages uncut. Faint age-toning and spotting to text pages and plates, but the steel engravings clean and bright with delicate handcolour.

Very good copy of this handsome guide to British birds.

London: Geo. B. Whittaker, 1824. 1824 second edition of this rare, collectible volume. The first of five books in a series by the author "of sketches of village scenes and vividly drawn characters was based upon life in (the village of) Three Mile Cross" where she lived near Berkshire, England. Her Wikipedia biography describes "Her writing has all the charm of unaffected spontaneous humour, combined with quick wit and literary skill." Rubbed gray and brown marbled boards with leather corners and leather extended spine. Backstrip of spine is missing and has been replaced with paper strip with typed title which is peeling from front cover. Leather corners are worn and the embossed design on the leather cornes and spine is worn but still visable. Bumped corners. Marbling on outside pages. 292 surprisingly bright pages. First House edition of this famous report. 1845. Complete in original binding except for the gigantic map which is available in full size color thick glossy paper professional reproduction ($25 extra if desired). Pagination: 583 pages, 22 plates, 4 maps, all blanks present. Includes fascinating pencil diagram of oil rig on back of map. Oil rig drawing titled "Sheffield Oil Company. Warren(?), Co., Pa." That pencil drawing is the only interior writing or ownership marking anywhere in the book. Condition is a mixed bag. Original half leather marbled boards show heavy wear and looks like they were professionally rehinged in the distant past. Binding is sound. Pages show moderate to heavy toning and foxing. Some plates have weird 'dot' foxing I have never seen elsewhere (see scan). Marbled endpapers. A nice well maintained copy suitable for reading and research with a cool drawing. Howes F372; Wagner-Camp 115:2; Graff 1436. House Doc. No. 166. Feel free to inquire. Please see scans of the book you will… Read More

She studied with chromosome researcher Theodor Boveri in Germany, and was awarded a PhD in 1906 for her study of sex cells. "The problem of chromosome halving in the sex cells was not well understood at the time, and her work challenged the classic work of the Norwegian cytologists Alette and Kristian Emil Schreiner.
