A fine copy in original hard wrappers, uncut and protected over the years in a custom chemise and slipcase--which Hersholt had custom made. Besides acting, Hersholt was a noted collector and a noted translator of the works of Hans Christian Anderson into English (translated over 150 works). This copy is labeled with Hersholt's custom gold label and signed by him on the label at the top. In addition the custom chemise has a small sticker with the notation of "No. 576"--From the library of Jean Hersholt". A tight and superb first edition -- the deluxe "Open Hearted Edition / Limited To Twelve Copies" (so giltstamped on front board) and boldly signed by both authors on the front flyleaf in (what else?) bright red ballpoint. The four color plates of Charles M. Russell watercolors are titled "Just a Little Sunshine," "Just a Little Rain," "Just a Little Pleasure" and "Just a Little Pain." Inlaid into the front board is a 1 3/4" diameter "brass check," an actual parlor house token whose text reads "Silver Dollar Hotel / Denver, Colo." around the rim and in the center "Good / for One / Screw / Madame / Ruth Campbell / Prop." Another limited edition of this title numbers 30 copies.

All edges gilt. Frontispiece, illustrations, marbled endpapers. Very good. Inner front hinge a tad delicate but expertly, archivally strengthened, thus tight. First edition -- second volume (only) of this scarce standard work. Other than the reinforced delicate front inner hinge, this is an exceptionally handsome example in custom quarter leather, with a text block clean and bright. Very fine in a dust jacket with minor wear, else fine. The jacket is much more attractive than usual for this book. The scarcest of Welch's novels, especially in nice condition.

This unique and limited edition book is in excellent condition. It is hardcover with a nice dust jacket. The dust jacket has a couple of small tears and is otherwise in mint condition. Several pages in full color, some showing rare collectibles. The names of former owners are inscribed in the front of the book.

Original newspaper, dated Honolulu, November 1, 1879. Illustrated with decorated masthead. 4to. (9½ by 12½ inches). Original self cover, 8 pages. 19th century newspaper from Hawaii that bills itself as "The Oldest Paper in The Pacific." This newspaper was printed by the missionary community in the Sandwich Islands, as the future state was then called, while the kingdom was still governed by its native Kings and Queens. Its content chronicles their progress and includes much general news of the island and its people, the South Seas and the sailors that frequented the islands and that part of the globe. There are also U.S. news items, some of them months old, and some interesting advertisements on the last pages. Complete, with large margins, uncut and untrimmed, attached at the top. Small ¼-inch tear at the top, in the blank margin, and several "micro-pinholes," o/w in pristine condition. Fine. Rare.
