Slight foxing typical of age. One steel engraved plate at page 72. Outer cover red cloth with medallion of publisher's initials on front and rear covers. Gold gilt on spine is mostly worn. The story was first published in England in 1867. The original 1867 version lists the other children's stories mentioned on the title page and identifies the author as Edis Serle. No other copy of this 1871 Philadelphia version has been found on the internet.

From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
