About This Item

To which are added letters written during a journey from Calais to Geneva, and St Bernard, in the year 1814. With an appendix containing a few original letters and anecdotes of the late Madame Elizabeth de France. Published to assist in providing free seats for the poor of Swansea by enlarging the parish church.

Bath: Richard Cruttwell, 1815. ii and 159 pages. Frontispiece portrait of Villettes. Contemporary marbled boards skillfully rebacked in quarter calf.

Bound with a 40 page Postscript to the Letters Written in France which was also published by Cruttwell in 1815.

The first 20 pages are a bare record of Villettes' services. There are a few anecdotes about him in the letters which were written by Bowdler, who was executor to Villettes' estate, while he was on his way to visit Villettes' sister in Switzerland. The 26 page appendix has letters written from The Temple by Princess Elizabeth, youngest sister of Louis XVI, in the months before she was guillotined.
