Paris: Les Editions Nationales, 1946. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. 4to 11" - 13" tall. Jean Augame. An unusual item, scarcely available to the trade, published in First Edition state by Paris Les Editions Nationales, 1946, bound most handsomely in quarto format, and xv + 260 pp. in length. Preface by Jean Cassou, then with Author's Notes and Table of Contents. Softcover text-block printed on lovely handmade paper, then bound into an ornately decorated cover (still covered in original glassine wraps) and then laid into a paper-over-boards-bound folder, then housed in a simple but classy-looking slip-case. Illustrations by Jean Aujame comprising 18 headbands engraved on wood, a dozen lithographs in color out of text and a series of 12 lithographs in black, still wrapped in original glassine paper. Exemplar No. 110 of 500 original copies bound, printed on pure Johannot paper. Table of Contents shows the item to be composed of: Notice su Clara Gazul - Les Espagnols en Danemark (Prologue - Premiere Journee - Deuxieme Journee - Troisieme Journee) - Un femme est un diable (Prologue) - L'amour africain -Ines Mendo ou Le prejuge vaincu - Ines Mendo ou Le trionphe du prejuge (Premiere Journeee - Deuxieme Journee - Troisieme Journee) - Le ciel et l'enfer - L'occasion - La carosse du Saint-Sacrement - Noptes de l'Auteur. Prosper Merimee was born in 1803 and died in 1870, long considered a proponent of the Romantic movement in French literature, and an alleged pioneer of the form known as the novella, a short novel or long short story. He is best known for his novella, Carmen on which Bizet modeled his opera of the same name.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
