Original Shakespeare leaf from FIRST FOLIO. Troylus and Cressida

This is an original leaf. It is NOT a reproduction, photocopy, poster or later impression. This leaf was salvaged from a woefully derelict copy of the First Folio, printed in London in 1623, and was part of a small collection of leaves formed in England in the early 20th century. I am offering it exactly as it was found in the collection.

This leaf was compared to the same leaf in the Brandeis copy to verify accuracy of description.

All the text is complete. There is some folding and marginal tearing as seen in the pictures but no loss of text. We have left it as found and have not unfolded or done any restoration. A bit of fingerstaining appears in the margin, especially in the corners where the actors turned the pages. Edges are frayed with some edge-browning as seen in the illustrations. This was a working volume! There is some mild soiling, mostly from ingrained dust. This leaf is entirely original as found in the collection and has not been restored or mucked with. Detail photographs show representative edges and corners. The leaf measures about 8x12 1/4 inches. This leaf is not watermarked.

There are but 232 known copies of the First Folio remaining in the world from a printing of about 750-1000 copies. Many are incomplete or married copies. This leaf is therefore very rare and it is unlikely to appear again elsewhere in any condition.

I have been an antiquarian book dealer since about 1975 and a member of the ABAA since the early 1980s . This leaf is from a collection of leaves I acquired that had been assembled in 1901/02. This is a rare a unique opportunity to acquire a leaf from one of the most important books in English.

1667 HERBAL Castore Durante Hebario Nuovo Plants Medicine Illustrated Mattioli

Castore Durante was a 16th-century Italian scholar who is best-remembered for his major work "Hebrario Nuovo". This work, which was first published in 1585, is a collection of descriptions of plants and their medical uses and healing properties. The plants detailed in this work were from Europe and the East and West Indies with information on how to identify them in their indigenous environment. According to Hunt,
"This was a popular Italian herbal that was reprinted in Italian, and translated and published in several other languages, for a number of years. The plant descriptions are written in the form of poems which Arber describes as 'pleasingly unscientific"

This highly coveted and desirable 1667 edition is extremely valuable much in part to the numerous in-text woodcuts in the style of Mattioli.

1697 ART Albrecht DURER Human Anatomy Proportion Drawing Illustrated ENGLISH

Albrecht Durer was a famous 15th-century painter and humanist. His engravings have become some of the most desirable Renaissance illustrations and have been repeatedly analyzed and studied by landscape and human-form artists. One of Durer's best written works was his instructional treatise on human proportion. This work provided direction on how to accurate draw the human form, both male and female figures and all parts of the body. "On Human Proportion" was one of the leading works of its kind even into the 18th-century.

This 1697 edition of Durer's "Human Proportion" was published in London and features 19 impressive full-page engravings, each with dozens of figures and examples. This particular edition is exceedingly rare! A must have!

A compilation of Quarles' works. The overall title page with details of the publisher is missing, but there is a dedication to King Charles I which was clearly specially written for the work, which makes it likely that it was published in the 1630's (it makes no reference to Civil War). The first text is 'A Feast for Worms' totalling 64 pages, which has a note for the Reader and has pages 13-36 misbound out of sequence. The second is Pentelogia, a short text covering pp 65-70. The third is Hadassa with a separate title page, preface to the Reader, introduction, dedication, and the History of Esther, running to p 147.
