About This Item
Cambridge, MA: Riverside Press/Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1863. First Edition . Full-Leather. Fine. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Georgina Lowell Putnam (1836-1922) was a niece of James Russell Lowell and the daughter of the wealthy industrialist Francis Cabot Lowell, Jr. of the noted mill town of Lowell, Mass. This presentation copy signed, "CLS from GLP March 1885." The handsome book is also signed "Louise Dervey With happy memories from C L Shaw May 1919." C. L. Shaw probably refers to Carlotta Lowell Shaw (Shaw Lowell), daughter of reformer Josephine Shaw (herself a sister of Civil War hero Robert Gould Shaw and the first woman to hold public office in New York City) and Civil War Major and fatal casualty Charles Russell Lowell (1835-1864). Brown, full-leather with five raised bands on spine. Blind-tooled designs of Maltese crosses on boards and spine. A.E.G. Marbled eps. with gilt dentelle design. 71 Pages. Spine has been expertly rebacked by the late master binder, James Tapley, providing a uniform, tight, attractive copy of an extremely scarce book.
