About This Item

Privately published (undated, likely 1st Edition). Softcover, 4-1/2"x8-1/4". Pages age tanned, but clean and unmarked. Cover has a slight water stain top right corner and is bent at top and bottom. Sewn text block intact; spine extremities a bit frayed; edges of covers worn, with a few tiny, closed tears at the edges; cover glued to the text block, fragile at the front hinge. ABOUT THE BOOK: "These paragraphs and other sketches are compiled from Jessie Perry Stratford's column--Human Interest--in the El Dorado (Kansas) Times and are reproduced as they appeared thruout (sic) the years, with few dates given. Some persons mentioned are years older--others but one month older--than when the paragraphs were originally published. So it is an ageless book. The unstudied humor of children is universally entertaining and many of the paragraphs in WHEN THEY WERE VERY YOUNG have been copied in other publications--some having made the rounds from Clad Hamilton Thompson's columns in The Kansas City Star to the magazine, Life, and other periodicals." (from the 1930 Edition) ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Popular columnist, women's editor, author and publisher; JESSIE PERRY STRATFORD's journalism career spanned over 70 years. Born in Florence, Kansas, Feb. 12, 1885, she was orphaned in her youth and lived with her grandparents in Brainerd, Butler County, until moving to El Dorado in 1901. After attending the Brumback Academy in 1903, she began her highly successful career with the Walnut Valley Times. Later associated with the Wichita Eagle, she was also owner-editor of the Burns News, the Western Butler County Times of Towanda, and the Butler Free-Lance. She played a major role in documenting the history and the people of Butler County, Kansas, through articles, columns and several published books. She died in 1980 yet remains an influential figure in the County today.
