New York: Pynson Printers, 1939. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Near Fine/No Jacket. Mueller, Hans Alexander. Inscribed by Illustrator(s). Special bound copy inscribed to Maxwell Steinhardt. This publication cost $25,000 and was only possible with the contribution by an anonymous donor/friend - there is some thought the donor might have been Steinhardt, a lawyer and noted book collector. Quarter-bound in velum with gilt lettering on spine, with marble paper on the boards. -13 1/8 x 10 1/4 inches ie slightly larger than the regular bound copies. Special copies have everything the regular bound copies have, as well as: ·a pencil signed proof of the artist's engraved self portrait (the same as with the portfolio edition) tipped in. ·a pencil signed frontispiece (fishing dock, title unknown) tipped in. ·Colophon with an inscription in pen, signed by the publisher, Elmer Adler, and the artist, dated Feb. 1940. The inscription reads, "this special copy for Maxwell Steinhardt." Also included are two adverts from the Colophon New Graphic Series. Text block tight, corners not bumped, white vellum spine is a bit dirty. FFEP has dealer pencil notations. Due to size/weight expect extra shipping charges - ask.
