Description:
Tan leather spine with black title plate and gilt title. Red and brown marbled boards.
Very scarce early work containing much ephemera relating to this great man Ebenezer Elliott (17 March 1781 – 1 December 1849) was an English poet, known as the Corn Law rhymer for his leading the fight to repeal the Corn Laws, which were causing hardship and starvation among the poor. Though a factory owner himself, his single-minded devotion to the welfare of the labouring classes won him a sympathetic reputation long after his poetry ceased to be read. Elliott's poems often seem naive or archaic to the modern reader who gets the impression that Elliott is struggling to write verse - the more he wrestles, the worse he becomes! In a fragment of autobiography printed in The Athenaeum (12 January 1850) he says that he was entirely self-taught, and attributes his poetic development to long country walks undertaken in search of wildflowers, and to a collection of books, including the works of Young, Barrow, Shenstone… Read More

Gilbert Burnet (1643 1715) was a Scottish theologian and historian, and Bishop of Salisbury. He was fluent in Dutch, French, Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. Burnet was respected as a cleric, a preacher, and an academic, as well as a writer and historian. Burnet began his 'History of My Own Time' in 1683, covering the English Civil War and the Commonwealth of England to the Treaty of Utrecht of 1713. The first volume was published in 1724, ending before the Glorious Revolution. In 1734 the second volume was published, taking the History to the Treaty of Utrecht. The work gives a sketch of the history of the Civil Wars and Commonwealth, and a detailed account of the immediately succeeding period down to 1713. While not free from egotism and some party feeling, it is written with a… Read More

A lovely and well produced set of Stendhal's work. Marie-Henri Beyle; 23 January 1783 – 23 March 1842, better known by his pen name Stendhal was a 19th-century French writer. Best known for the novels Le Rouge et le Noir (The Red and the Black, 1830) and La Chartreuse de Parme (The Charterhouse of Parma, 1839), he is highly regarded for the acute analysis of his characters' psychology and considered one of the early and foremost practitioners of realism. A self-proclaimed egotist, he coined the same characteristic in his characters' 'Beylism'. Stendhal syndrome, Stendhal's syndrome or Florence syndrome is a psychosomatic condition involving rapid heartbeat, fainting, confusion and even hallucinations, allegedly occurring when individuals become exposed to objects, artworks, or phenomena of great beauty and antiquity. He became a major in the army on 1 March 1794, and a lieutenant-colonel on 1 January 1798. For many years Paterson was an assistant to the Quartermaster-General to the Forces, based at the Horse Guards, London. On 31 December 1812 he was made Lieutenant Governor of Quebec, a sinecure, and held the appointment for the rest of his life. A truly lovely book Sketches by "Boz," Illustrative of Every-day Life and Every-day People (commonly known as Sketches by Boz) is a collection of short pieces Charles Dickens originally published in various newspapers and other periodicals between 1833 and 1836. They were re-issued in book form, under their current title, in February and August 1836, with illustrations by George Cruikshank. The first complete one volume edition appeared in 1839. The 56 sketches concern London scenes and people, and the whole work is divided into four sections: "Our Parish", "Scenes", "Characters" and "Tales". The material in the first three sections consists of non-narrative pen-portraits, but the last section comprises fictional stories. The sketch "Mr Minns and his Cousin" (originally titled "A Dinner at Poplar Walk"), was the first work of fiction Dickens ever published. It appeared in The Monthly… Read More

1804 Naval Tactics Clerk Navy Horatio Nelson RARE Napoleon & Rev War PROVENANCE
John Clerk was an 18th-century Scottish author who is best remembered for his books on naval tactics and sea warfare. His works on naval strategies were so popular that Horatio Nelson was known to have used excerpts from his naval essays as orders for his ships. 'An Essay on Naval Tactics' was first published in 1790 and was paramount in establishing new offensive maneuvers used to break through enemy lines. The 'cutting the line' technique was described in detail and became one of the most important naval maneuvers of the late 18th- and 19th-centuries.
This 1804 edition of Clerk's masterpiece includes the expected illustrations depicting ship movement and direction.
