Very scarce early work containing much ephemera relating to this great man Ebenezer Elliott (17 March 1781 – 1 December 1849) was an English poet, known as the Corn Law rhymer for his leading the fight to repeal the Corn Laws, which were causing hardship and starvation among the poor. Though a factory owner himself, his single-minded devotion to the welfare of the labouring classes won him a sympathetic reputation long after his poetry ceased to be read. Elliott's poems often seem naive or archaic to the modern reader who gets the impression that Elliott is struggling to write verse - the more he wrestles, the worse he becomes! Gilbert Burnet (1643 1715) was a Scottish theologian and historian, and Bishop of Salisbury. He was fluent in Dutch, French, Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. Burnet was respected as a cleric, a preacher, and an academic, as well as a writer and historian. Burnet began his 'History of My Own Time' in 1683, covering the English Civil War and the Commonwealth of England to the Treaty of Utrecht of 1713. The first volume was published in 1724, ending before the Glorious Revolution. In 1734 the second volume was published, taking the History to the Treaty of Utrecht. Paterson was gazetted an ensign in the 30th (Cambridgeshire) Regiment of Foot on 13 December 1765, promoted to a lieutenant on 8 May 1772, and to a captaincy on 11 July 1783. He became a major in the army on 1 March 1794, and a lieutenant-colonel on 1 January 1798. They were re-issued in book form, under their current title, in February and August 1836, with illustrations by George Cruikshank. The first complete one volume edition appeared in 1839. The 56 sketches concern London scenes and people, and the whole work is divided into four sections: "Our Parish", "Scenes", "Characters" and "Tales". John Clerk was an 18th-century Scottish author who is best remembered for his books on naval tactics and sea warfare. His works on naval strategies were so popular that Horatio Nelson was known to have used excerpts from his naval essays as orders for his ships. 'An Essay on Naval Tactics' was first published in 1790 and was paramount in establishing new offensive maneuvers used to break through enemy lines. The 'cutting the line' technique was described in detail and became one of the most important naval maneuvers of the late 18th- and 19th-centuries.
This 1804 edition of Clerk's masterpiece includes the expected illustrations depicting ship movement and direction.
