Description:
Chemnitz: Schmeitzner, 1878. Second Edition. Hardcover. Very good. NIETZSCHE, Friedrich, Die Geburt der Tragödie (The Birth of Tragedy). Schmeitzner, Chemnitz, 1878. TP + [III]-IV + [1]-144, Octavo. The famous Second Edition, First Issue of Nietzsche's first book. (Schaberg 30). The publication history of Nietzsche s Birth of Tragedy is about as complicated as any. The 143-page first edition appeared in 1872, published by E.W. Fritzsch. Shortly after its release, Fritzsch printed a second edition that included Nietzsche s corrections, extending the text to 144 pages. This was completed by March of 1874, yet because of some conflicts between Nietzsche and Fritzsch (and the financial difficulties Fritzsch was experiencing), the 750 copies of this 144-page second edition were never available for sale. They sat in a warehouse for 4 years, until Schmeitzner, Nietzsche s new publisher, acquired the copies. Schmeitzner affixed his own label on top of the original publisher s information and made the… Read More

Paris: chez Antoine-Augustin Renouard, 1821. First Edition. Wraps. Very good. Equality of Opportunity SAINT SIMON, Claude-Henri. Du système industriel. Paris: chez Antoine-Augustin Renouard, 1821. Half-title + TP + [i] - xx = Preface + half-title + [3] - 311 + blank leaf. Octavo. First Edition in original wrappers. Saint-Simon's Socialism put forth in Du système industriel (The Industrial System) is the Socialism of equal opportunity rather than of equal wealth; the nation must be industrious, but there will always be classes of the industrious and the idle, for which reason there will always be hierarchies. Saint-Simon had no great faith in political democracy, despite his agitation against social injustice (including towards women); efficient administration of society by the industriels would ensure the governing of things and not people. This was the first collective appearance in book form of a series of pamphlets in the form of letters, published individually in 1821 during the trial of… Read More

First printing of Kant's famous reply to the question 'What is Enlightenment?' (pp. 481-494). In this essay, appearing in the December issue, Kant responds to the question posed the previous year by Reverend Johann Friedrich Zöllner. Many intellectuals responded with essays of their own, but KantÂ’s stands as the most important as he unexpectedly claims courage more than intellect stands as the critical component for an enlightened individual and society. The volume also includes Moses Mendelssohn's answer to the same question (pp. 193-200), and one other essay by Kant: 'Idee zu einer allgemeinen Geschichte in weltbürgerlicher Absicht' (pp. 385-411).
