1692 Puritan & Huguenot Liturgy John Quick Gallia Reformata French Protestants

John Quick was a 17th-century Anglican preacher known for his Puritan sermons and association with French Huguenot refugees. Many of these refugees fled from French rule and landed in England near Plymouth. It was from these events that Quick wrote 'Synodicon in Gallia Reformata' – a collection of liturgical texts used by the Huguenots in late 17th-century England.

This volume from the 1692 first edition features an impressive double frontispiece: a portrait of Quick and a full-page view of the Synod gathering.

Saint Dorotheus of Gaza was a 6th-century monk from Syria/Palestine who wrote several instructional treatises for the other members of his monastery. These works were written as directions on spiritual living - stressing the importance of obedience, silence, reading the scriptures, character of God, and overcoming temptation and human vices.

This 17th-century French version of writings of Dorotheus includes many of the spiritual doctrines written by Giles of Assisi, 13th-century saint. This edition is believed to be translated into French by Francois Bouton.

1696 History of Catholic Church Councils Marco Battaglini Italian Synods Venice

Marco Battaglini was a 17th-century Italian historian who was known for his expertise on Catholic church councils. In 1686, Battaglini published an impressive book on the history of hundreds of councils. In the first issue 'Universal History of all Councils of the Holy Church', Battaglini covered nearly 500 individual Catholic meetings from all over Europe, Africa, and even the Americas, and in subsequent editions, including this 1696 edition, another 400 councils were added.

The Council of Florence was one of the most important 15th-century ecumenical councils of the Catholic Church. This council was one of the catalysts in determining whether the pope had supreme power over the Catholic Church or not.


Horatio Justinian, an early 17th-century Greek-Genoese historian, collected and published the acts and decisions of the Council of Florence, which to that point had only been available in Greek. This work, 'Holy Acts of the Council of Florence', helped unite the views of various circles including Armenians, Jacobites, Maronites, and even Ethiopians mostly due to Justinianus's connections to Greece.

Tertullian was a 2nd-century early Christian church author and apologist. His works helped establish Western theology and early Church doctrine, especially those that spoke out against heresy. He is perhaps most famous for being the first Latin writer to use the term 'trinity' in reference to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Tertullian emphatically defended Christianity against pagans as well as defended 'freedom of religion' as human right unable to be taken away. One of his important apologetics was an anti-Jewish treatise to counteract Gnosticism and other philosophically based doctrines.
These defenses, along with other Tertullian works, are collected in this 1664 Latin edition. This edition also includes shorter works including a 'life of Tertullian' by Jacob Pamelio.

Matthew Hale was a 17th-century English judge who was an influential figure in the legal proceedings against offenses to the royal crown in England. Author Gilbert Burnett published the best account of life of Hale – a biography which covers the entirety of Hale's young life through his judicial career and eventual death. Curiously, Burnet gives special attention to Hale's sympathy toward dissenters, which was particularly interesting considering the climate at the height of the English Civil War.

1589 1ed Guillaume Pepin Bible Sermons Catholic Rosary Imitation of Saints Venice
Guillaume Pepin was a late 15th-century Dominican friar and preacher. He gained his fame in the early 1500s from his published sermons, in many of which Pepin publicly attacked royalty and Francis I. Pepin himself said,
"Is royalty a holy thing? Who made it? The Devil, the people, and God: God, because nothing happens with his will; the devil, because he has breathed ambition and pride; the people because they have given themselves over to servitude." (Pepin, Sermones de Destrucitone, 1518; from Farge)
Pepin was instrumental in spreading Marian piety and played a critical role in the development in the modern use of Rosary in Catholic traditions.
This 1589 first edition of the sermons of Pepin was published in Venice by Antoino Bertani, bound in impressive vellum.

1698 Hymni Sacri et Novi Catholic Hymns Music Chant Latin Poetry Jean Santeul

Known mostly for his Latin poems, Jean Baptiste de Santeul wrote a plethora of hymns that were published in 17th-century Breviaries. Santeul was a French-born poet who wrote under the name Santolius Victorinus. His complete collection of hymns and hymn texts were published in "Hymni Sacri et Novi" which first appeared in 1689.

This 1698 edition was the first enlarged edition of 'Hymni' and includes Santeul's hymns for all occasions of the Catholic liturgical year. In addition to the Latin text, this book contains hymns with music notation – chant with neumes.

First published in 1580, the Essays of Michel de Montaigne were a collection of essays and writings on a variety of topics and content. Montaigne was rather decisive in his rhetoric and used various Ancient Greek, Latin, and Italian texts as examples and references, such as Lucretius and Plutarch quotations. Montaigne himself stated that the goal of his essays was to describe man with 'utter frankness and honesty.' According to the scholar Paul Oskar Kristeller,
"the writers of the period were keenly aware of the miseries and ills of our earthly existence."

Montaigne sought to break man down into his basic features, which, at the time, was extreme volatility. He wrote on marriage being an absolute necessity for raising children, but he also quoted, in the 'Essays,' that "Marriage is like a cage; one sees the birds outside desperate to get in, and those inside desperate to get out".

The anonymous author, known only as "A.M." discusses the prevalence of swearing and cursing, drunkenness, uncleanliness and sexual perversion, and breaking the Sabbath. It also offers advice to ministers on how to properly handle these issues within the church.

1658 RARE Austen on Francis Bacon Natural History Philosophy Science Experiments

Francis Bacon, one of the most famous English philosophers and scientists of the Renaissance. While most of his work deals with discovery, scientific method, and the scientific revolution, he did lean strongly toward Puritanism in his personal devotion.

Bacon's "Historia Naturalis," or 'Natural History' was written to show the divisions of natural history, but more importantly to show how natural history overlaps with natural philosophy and they are not two distinct disciplines. This book helped lay the foundation for many philosophical methodologies that would be important through the 18th- and 19th-centuries.

Author Ralph Austen published his observations and commentary on Bacon's famed work. This 1658 first edition of Austen's 'Observations' was published in Oxford by Hall and Robinson.
