1716 Paradisus Animae German ASCETICISM Prayers Illustrated ART Horstius + MARY

Jacob Merlo Horstius was a 17th-century Cologne priest who was best known for his works on asceticism. One of his more notable works was 'Paradisus Animae Christianae', a devotional work originally published in German in 1644. This book includes prayers, hymns and poems, scripture verses and references. This particular 1716 edition is notable for its beautiful full-page engravings and illustrated title page.

Maximlien de Bethune was a 16th-century French statesman who was the first Duke of Sully. Most known for his service under Henry IV of France, Sully left a collection of memoirs which is now a valuable and important work on the history of France during the reign of Henry the Great. Even though 'Memoires' contains many fictitious stories, it is still recognized for its accuracy and portrayal of European royalty.

In 1760, Pons Augustin Alletz published one the best and most popular manuals on country life. 'The Agronomist',
or 'l'Albert Moderne', was a highly desirable book of advice on gardening, animal breeding, veterinary medicine, hunting, and cooking recipes. The most important, and most oft-read section was that on wine and wine making. This section also tells of the health benefits of wine as well as the healing properties and aromatics and vinegar.
The title of this edition suggests the influence of Albert, or Albertus Magnus, a medieval friar who became well-known for his writings of secrets of the world on alchemy, astronomy, physiology, theology, and much, much more. Alletz sought to gain prominence by featuring the name of a well-respected mind in the title of his book.

1788 HANDEL Composer Dettingen Te Deum Classical Music Austrian Succession WAR

Alongside Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frederic Handel was one of the two greatest Baroque music composers. Best known for his 'Messiah', Handel was responsible for hundreds of pieces of music, many of which were written with liturgical texts. Handel's 1743 masterpiece 'Dettingen Te Deum' was written in honor of the British victory at Dettingen in the War of Austrian Succession.
Handel, who had become proud of his English home, wrote this setting of 'Te Deum'
for the day King George II appointed a day of celebration in honor of the victory. Like many of Handel's works, it features chorus, full orchestra, and solos.
This rare edition was printed in 1788 by Arnold according to the "STC of Music Printed Before 1825".

Noël-Antoine Pluche was an early 18th-century French priest and historian who is most remembered today for his landmark work of natural history 'Spectacle of Nature'. While this work would have significant influence on botanists and naturalists, Pluche designed the work to be for the general population, not of scientific merit. There was a time when Pluche himself called it 'La physique des enfants' or 'physics of the children'. The main themes portrayed in this work are not simply of the physical, natural world. Take for instance the first volume – Pluche writes, "We are here only to be virtuous" – a moral vision on how we are to live. In the 13th-century, devout followers of Saint Francis of Assisi formed the Third Order of Saint Francis. This order closely followed the preachings and examples set by Saint Francis who corresponded with these groups through letter. These letters ultimately developed into what would become the rules for penance in the Third Order.

This early 18th-century account of Third Order of Penance was collected and translated into French by Claude Frassen who included biographical sketches of the lives of saints of the Order along with prayers and liturgical texts. It also contains a printing of "Exercises of Piety" from 1703.

This work includes axioms of Euclid's Elements, as well as definitions of geometric terms. Perhaps, though, the most important section deals with some of the earliest known information on Roman metrics.
