Extracted from Nouvelles Archives de Musée d'Histoire Naturelle. 1895, 3. série, tome. VII. pp. (83)-114 with four text woodcuts and two chromolithographed plates by A. Millot (Lit. Lemercier) showing Max and Maurice.Contemporary calf backed marbled boards, spine ruled and lettered in gilt. An extra-illustrated volume with 22 engravings, lithographs, half-tones and especially important 9 mounted original photographs by an unknown photographer showing the two orangoutans (living and as stuffed animals) with their zookeeper, their taxidermist (?) and with an exotic looking young male. It must have been a fascinating entertainment for the Parisian public and it is said that they attracted more than 100.000 visitors in 1893. They were imported from Borneo and travelled throughout Europe, public viewing was possible in Antwerp, Bruxelles and Paris. Within a year they died from stress and pneumonia. Album with 52 photographs – each ca 220 x 280 mm – on black cardboard mounts showing clocks, mantelpieces, wall appliques, lanterns, chandeliers, bronzes and candelstands cast by the atelier of Henri Vian in Paris. Each photograph with numbers and dimensions of objects in the negativ. A number of plates with pencilled annotations on back of mounts, with numbering and sometimes dimensions of objects. Cont. calf, with an all over decoration of floral elements. Spine on five raised bands. Covers framed by double gilt fillets. Foot of spine stamped H. Vian / Paris. Folio (460 x 370 mm). Slightly rubbed, extremeties worn. Henri Vian (1860-1905), a bronze-caster active in the second half of the 19th century, was specialized in the production of bronzes, light fittings, chandeliers, chimney mantelpieces, ormolu and patinated-mounted vases always of very fine quality. A businessman, head of the firm begun by his father, Lavretta also served as a state legislator, a member of the board of public works, and an Alabama delegate to the Democratic national convention of 1900. He is considered the first Italian-American mayor of a major city in the United States. Calligraphed title, verso with manuscript inked faked printer's sign "the Shingle-syde Press" within double rules, 16 architectural plates (15 on thick drawing paper, one on tracing paper) with pencil and watercolour drawings of elevations, plans and sections of his house. Loosely contained in later cloth portfolio, with gilt morocco label to front cover. Folio (700 x 470 mm). A charming set of large hand-drawn and delicately coloured architectural delineations for the home and studio of Connecticut illustrator, poet, and architect, William Walworth Stilson, (1874-1962), a Connecticut artist born in New Milford and a resident of Bridgeport and Shelton. He illustrated several books, including Willard Nelson Clute, Our Ferns in Their Haunts (1901); William Cullen Bryant, Thanatopsis (1909); and Hamilton Wright Mabie, The Writers of Knickerbocker New York (1912). The personal copy of Monsieur François Philippe Voisin (1821-1918) (= Voisin Bey), his name stamped in gilt on front cover, a French engineer and from 1861 to 1870, the chief engineer of the Suez Canal Company during the construction of the Suez Canal, together with its director Ferdinand de Lesseps. The 48 plates show 76 collotypes (numbered 1 through 74 and 2 unnumbered collotypes), they depict views, portraits, seascapes, and the inauguration itself and showing on the other hand the canal (and its surroundings) on its entire length. Two hand coloured lithographed broadsides by Lemercier after Victor Adam (1801-1866) and Louis Stanislas Marin-Lavigne (1797-1860) heightened with gum Arabic, each with a large central image showing Napoléon on horseback one dated 1800 the other 1815, each framed by 20 further images which relate important steps in his military and political career giving a full account of his reign closing with a view of his tomb on the island of St. Helena. Large folio (660 x 500 mm). Mounted and framed within modern white cardboard passepartouts. Light foxing, in margins else fine. Two spectacular large size lithographs in beautiful contemporary hand colouring, celebrating Napoleon's life and accomplishments. Many of the small images depict battle scenes others with important political events. Lower margins of each sheet with variant hand coloured allegorical vignette, one showing a heraldic eagle the other the Code Napoléon. Well margined copies.

Rare large-format work with magnificent depictions of horses with KVK and OCKC showing only four copies (ÖNB, Madrid, NYPL, and Chicago) with 31 plates only (?). A number of the thin letterpress leaves with short tears else fine. The author was a master of the guard.
