[Germany: c1835]., 1835. 4to. 237 x 190 mm. 250 full-page watercolour drawings of flowers, each with ms. title in Latin & German & number. with 57 pp. manuscript in German containing a brief description of each flower & 5 pp. manuscript index. 19th century bds. (bit worn, a few spots of paper adhesion on first watercolour, lacking flyleaf & probably a manuscript title). An appealing collection of competently executed original botanical watercolours including depictions of begonias, irises, salvia, passionflowers, amaryllis, lobelia, paeony, California poppy, hibiscus, azalea, trillium,.browallia, &c. Apparently part of a larger work as the watercolours are numbered from 6201 to 6450, but unfortunately we are unable to offer any information regarding the author or the work, including whether or not it was ever published..

First Edition of the Latin Translation by Nicholas Carr [1524-1568], the second edition of Demosthenes to be published in England. The first English translation, by Thomas Wilson, was published by Denham in London the previous year. Appended are a life of Carr by Bartholomew Dodington, one of Carr's successors as regius professor of Greek at Trinity College, Cambridge, and eulogies and funeral orations by Henry Howard, Thomas Bing, Thomas Hatcher, and others. Lahontan was only sixteen years of age when he first arrived in New France in 1683, as an officer in the colonial regular troops. During the next ten years he saw active service in the sieur de La Barre’s expedition against the Iroquois in 1684, in the Marquis de Denonville’s campaign against the Senecas in 1687, and in numerous skirmishes with the English. In 1693 he was appointed King’s lieutenant in Plaisance (Placentia), Newfoundland. His career, however, came to an abrupt end when he was accused of insubordination by the governor of Newfoundland, Jacques François de Brouillan. Lahontan fled to Portugal and spent the rest of his life in wandering exile, chiefly in Holland and Germany.
