Description:
London: Saunders and Otley, 1838. First London trade edition. Hardcover. f to vg. Octavo (8 x 5"). XII, 310, [2]pp (Publisher's advertisement). Original half cloth over paper covered boards, with printed title label on spine. "Sartor Resartus" is Thomas Carlyle's most enduring and influential work. Originally published in serial form in "Fraser's Magazine" in 1833-1834, it was discovered by the American Transcendentalists.* Sponsored by Ralph Waldo Emerson, it was first printed as a book in Boston in 1836 and immediately became the inspiration for the Transcendental movement. The first London trade edition was published in 1838 (our copy). By the 1840s, largely on the strength of "Sartor Resartus," Carlyle became one of the leading literary figures in Britain. The work is a fictional autobiography of a German philosopher called Diogenes Teufelsdröckh. Its deeper concerns are social injustice, the right way of living in the world, and the large questions of faith and understanding. Spine sunned… Read More

London/Chicago: The Egypt Exploration Society/University of Chicago Press, 1958. First edition. Hardcover. g- to vg. Elephant Folios. Vol.1: (xi) 40 plates. Vol.2: (ix) 46 plates. Vol.3: (xi) 65 plates. Vol.4: (xviii) 80 plates. Vol.1 still retains its brown paper dust jacket. The acclaimed publication remains a key resource for the study of the temple and of Egyptology in general, to this day. The Temple (also known as The Great Temple of Abydos) is recognized as among the most significant structures in the area, as was primarily built as a memorial to King Seti I (father of Ramses II), and a place of reverence for the lineage of the past Pharoahs. The temple is well known for the "Abydos King List", a list of rulers of the principle dynasties, carved onto a wall. The site… Read More

Hamburg: Lucas Gräfe & Sillem (Edmund Sillem), 1916. First edition. Hardcover. g+ to vg. Folio (12 x 10"). [4], 109, [1]pp (Text), lxxv (i.e. 80) leaves (Photographic plates). Original olive cloth, with gold lettering to spine and front cover. Illustrated with original x-ray photographs of broken bones, imbedded bullets, etc.. "Röntgen-Atlas der Kriegsverletzungen 1914-1916" is a rather disturbing German World War I medical book showing photographs of war injuries before and after reconstructive surgery. In 1895, the invention of the X-ray by Wilhelm Roentgen created an amazing step forward in the history of medicine. For the first time ever, the inner workings of the body could be made visible without having to cut into the flesh. Even before the outbreak of the First World War, X-rays were already used to help diagnose injuries to troops in the Greco-Turkish War (1897), the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), and the two Balkan Wars (1912-1913). In 1914, nations were engulfed in an armed… Read More
