A lovely book marred by a sunned, darkened, dry and chipped spine. Silk and marbled endpapers, gilt rule turn ins - with a lovely two page illustration by Papé on card stock that was bound in but is now loose but present. The first English edition of Baillet's lasting biography of Descartes, published in two volumes in Paris in 1691 and abridged the following year. Later half leather, front board detached, old seminary library label to spine and embossed stamp to title, but no other marks. Added endpapers but original endpapers preserved and covered in notes in an early hand as is the verso of the title - signature to top of title page. Marginal tear to page 111 almost touching a gloss - probably trimmed when rebound but still with wide margins. Light occasional foxing and finger soiling, but generally bright and unmarked. 286pp with advertising leaf at rear. Rare in commerce (one copy at auction in the last 40 years at Swann in 1989). Full early vellum with minor repairs and wear to the spine, a bit of worming to blanks. An attractive early copy of Bonaventure writing on salvation. Saint Bonaventure was canonized in 1482, but not made a Doctor of the Church until 1588. Notes to title, endpapers, and occasionally in the margins, all in an early hand. Light browning to page edges and original covers, offsetting from the frontis, small section with a dampstain at the end of volume 2, including to a section of the Inferno plate and the two following plates. Some miscreases and light browning to some plates, but generally quite clean. The second edition of this history of Pisa, with many more plates (32 versus 16) than the original 1787 edition. 32 plates, many folding, plus the frontis including two impressions of 15th century plates, Baccio Baldini's Inferno, after the Camposanto fresco in Pisa, and St. Jerome Penitent, also attributed to Baldini.
