Considered one of the most important books every published, any edition (there were six) of The Origin of Species that was published during Darwin's lifetime (he died in 1882) is exceptionally sought after, since the print runs were relatively small for such a significant work Only 10,000 copies were printed cumulatively through this fifth edition (which was for only 2,000 copies) This copy was custom bound in full leather with gilt tooling, but the spine and front board are loose and the back board has detached But the hinge breaks are clean and should be repairable The text block is very sound however, and except for the hinge detachments, the leather binding is in relatively good condition There is modest foxing on the ffeps, but otherwise the contents are in very good condition with only minor age toning The edges are marbled, as are the endpapers.

From Britannica Philipp Clüver, Latin Philippus Cluverius, Polish Filip Cluwer, (born 1580, Danzig [now GdaÅ„sk], Pol.â€"died Dec. 31, 1622, Leiden, Neth.), German geographer, a principal figure in the revival of geographic learning in Europe and the founder of historical geography. After becoming a soldier and then traveling throughout most of Europe, Clüver in 1615 settled in Leiden, where the following year he was appointed geographus academicus ("academic geographer"), with an annual stipend. He approached geography through history and classical authors. Among his works the most important is Introductio in Universam Geographiam (1624; "Introduction to Universal Geography"). Eugene Aram (1704â€"1759) was an English philologist, but also infamous as the murderer celebrated by Thomas Hood in his ballad, The Dream of Eugene Aram, and by Bulwer-Lytton in his 1832 novel Eugene Aram In 1734 he moved to Knaresbrough, where he remained as schoolmaster till 1744 In that year a man named Daniel Clark, a shoemaker and an intimate friend of Aram, after obtaining a considerable quantity of goods from some of the tradesmen in the town, suddenly disappeared Suspicions of being concerned in this swindling transaction fell upon Aram His garden was searched, and some of the goods found there However, there was not sufficient evidence to convict him of any crime, and he was discharged In February 1758 a skeleton was dug up at Thistle Hill in Knaresbrough, and some suspicion arose that it might be Clark's Aram's wife had more than once hinted that her husband and a man named Houseman knew the secret of Clark's disappearance… Read More
