Description:
Extremely rare volume of poetry and essays by the early 19th century French author, poet and literary figure, Delphine de Girardin née Gay. This small (4.5 in. x 2.75 in.) volume is over 180 years old and is in excellent condition. Quarter bound in green leather and marbled paper. The spine is embossed with gilt scrollwork, title and author. The hinge is tight and the pages slightly yellowed with age, but still in fine, readable condition. Red Silk bookmark is still attached and faded only on the surface outside the book. No internal markings, bookplates or tears to pages. A remarkably preserved book for its age! There are no other similar copies of this vintage for sale on the Web!

Description:
This beautifully preserved book is in Near Fine condition. Boards, titles and decorative design are all bright and clear with no fading or chipping. Pages are clean and hinge is tight. Minor bumps to head and foot of spine. End papers are slightly soiled and original owner's name is in pencil on FFEP. There are very minor scuffs to the front cover pictorial pastedown.
The author was a noted stage and screen actress of her day as well as an author and a Harper's correspondent in World War I. She was married to Walter Hale, an artist, illustrator and actor who could have been the illustrator of this book as he illustrated many other books for Louise. Priced to sell! There is only one other 1st Edition of this title for sale on the web at a much higher price.

The book is in near perfect condition with just 2-3 front endpaper pages having been creased when they were folded up when the book was closed. Otherwise, no stains, scuffs, or tears. The outer binding of this leather-bound book shows many signs of wear over the last 340 years, but the hinges are firm and intact. Endpapers are heavily toned and there are some light pencil scrawls on REP's (child scribbling?). Some end papers have small tears and creases. Published by the long-time printing firm, Thomas Newcomb for another London printer, Joseph Hindmarsh, at the "Black Bull in Cornhill, near the Royal Exchange." Seneca was a Stoic philosopher of Ancient Rome, a statesman and dramatist.
