[New York, 19 October 1952].. Original borderless gelatin silver print, 25.5 x 17 cm (9 7/8 x 6 3/4 inches). Matted. Fine. A beautiful portrait of the then 25 year old singer, dating from the year of her Broadway appearance in the musical review, NEW FACES. The 1954 film version was her first credited screen role. This print bears Van Vechten's ink studio stamp on the verso. The subject, date and negative number are also written on the verso in ink, in Van Vechten's hand. There are prints of three other negatives from the same session in the Library of Congress Van Vechten photo archive, and two other prints from the session were exhibited in EXTRAVAGANT CROWD CARL VAN VECHTEN'S PORTRAITS OF WOMEN (Yale, Beinecke Library, 2003). A fine portrait of the young singer, then in the ascendance of her career, less than a year after her role as St. Settlement in the Broadway revival of Gertrude Stein's FOUR SAINTS IN THREE ACTS. This print bears Van Vechten's blindstamp, and on the verso his ink studio stamp. The subject, date and negative number are also written on the verso in ink, in Van Vechten's hand. There is a print of another negative from the same sitting, albeit dated in the catalogue entry a week earlier - an impossibility as it is separated from this photograph by only one other exposure and the set and dress are identical - in the LC Van Vechten photo archive. The saga of desegregation in the Dallas Public Schools. Following the Supreme Court order in Brown vs Topeka (Board of Education), Dallas' reluctance to desegregate resulted in the school district being under the surveillance of the Federal District Court. In 1994, after 40 years, the District Court released its surveillance and declared the school district in compliance. An interesting companion piece to Jim Schutz' 'The Accommodation', which cover much of the same period except it's focus is housing. The book is in fine, like new condition. The dust jacket has a fold on the inside front flap, otherwise fine.

Hardcover rebound in mid-20th century 3/4 leather with marbled paper-covered boards. Red leather label with gilt lettering on the front board. The red leather label is scuffed but still bright. The binding of the book shows light to moderate wear. Prior owner's 20th century bookplate on the front pastedown. New endpapers. The text is a bit toned, and the title page and terminal leaf show heavier toning. The text is generally clean. Scarce. Henry Beaufoy (1750-1795) was a British Member of Parliament and was the son of a Quaker merchant (although after marriage he conformed to the Church of England). In April, 1791 he voted for abolition of the slave trade but revised his position towards gradual abolition in 1792.

The book binder's receipt ("3.27" may suggest a 1927 rebinding, but it looks to be more likely from the 1950s; rebound by Joseph Ruzicka). Light wear to the binding. New endpapers. The old front flyleaf is laid in loosely and has a mid-20th century owner's bookplate attached. A sound copy. The text shows some toning but appears overall clean. The last leaf, an Errata, has some repairs on the fore edge. Text is in French. Jean-Baptiste Gabriel Larchevesque-Thibaud (1745-1817) was born on Saint-Domingue (now Haiti) and had a coffee plantation there. Hardcovers bound in original brown cloth with white paper title labels on the spines. The bindings are rubbed and bumped, and the spine ends are fraying. There is also some splitting on the outer rear hinge of Vol. I. The labels are toned, rubbed and chipped. Damping on the rear board of volume one and the front board of volume two. There is a prior owner's 20th century bookplate on the front pastedown of both volumes. Hinges are secure. Some slight damping at the lower right corner of the text block on both volumes, not affecting the text. Text is toned. Publisher's four-page catalogue at the front of each volume.

2007 First edition, first printing. Art front board cover, 11.25"x11." VG with no d/j. 119 pp. Romare is known for his collages. In 1977 he created 20 collages from episodes from Homer's Odyssey. O'Meally writes that the heroes in the collages are sympathetic to The African American experience. This is not the run of the mill coffee table book. This is a serious study of a truly significant artist/thinker. It is a beautifully put together book and exhibition.
