John Greenleaf Whittier was an American Quaker who was known for his poetry advocating slavery abolition, Native Americans living, and the life of Quakers. Beginning in 1830, Whitter began writing poems that were heavily influenced by politics and the American slavery abolition movement. This 1896 edition is a compilation of Whittier's Poetical works and a desirable part of the history of American poetry illustrated with engraved portraits in each volume.

Thomas Paine's political activism in the late 18th-century was vitally important to many of the successes of the American Revolution. He was responsible for some of the most important propaganda pamphlets at the start of the war which inspired American rebels in 1776. 'Common Sense' alone is considered the all-time best American pamphlet, in fact, John Adams is known to have said "without the pen of the author of 'Common sense,' the sword of Washington would have been raised in vain.'

In 1925, an impressive printing of the life and works of Paine was published in New Rochelle, New York. Notably, this edition was edited by famed scientist Thomas Edison.

Profusely illustrated throughout with drawings by the author portraying daily life at the camp. Laid-in is the original order form for the book from the Hollywood JACL.

"A History of New York" was Washington Irving's first attempt at satirical writing. He achieved it. His alter-ego, Diedrich Knickerbocker, narrates this history of New York, but fabricates facts and alters or ignores important information of the New World metropolis. The fictional story takes place in the 17th-century and concludes with New York (or New Amsterdam) falling to the British in 1664. It is because of the success of this work, and the ensuing popularity of Irving's pseudonym that Manhattan residents are called 'Knickerbockers'.
