Externally rubbed but sound and attractive copy in a decorative Victorian binding, emerald green cloth lettered and decorated in gilt and black, 690 pages. Covers have some surfaces scuffing and edgewear, gilt and black printing bright and clear, very minor light fraying to corners and spine ends, front hinge internally neatly repaired, sound text block, small spot to front endpapers, notes in pencil on rear blank, no other markings.. George Robins, the auctioneer, advertised the sale to begin on April 25, 1842, and continue for 24 days. However, the original plan to sell some of the prints, drawings, and illustrated books in large lots was altered, so the contents originally proposed for the seventh and eight days of the sale were withdrawn, recatalogued in smaller lots, and sold later. As many as 7 editions of the catalog are known. This edition includes descriptions of contents through day 24, omitting days 7 and 8; the 6th day concludes with lot 160, omitting the Waldegrave manuscripts (originally lots 161- 187). Edges of leaves are toned; scattered foxing; dampstains in the margin of the first four plates in Vol. II. Tissue guards are present for all but a couple plates. A few leaves loose. Errata-page for both volumes at terminus of Vol. II. Ninety-six engraved plates, complete. Vol. I 98 ff.; Vol. II 102 ff. Folio. 14.25 x 10.5 inches. Scarce. Though ex-library, still an attractive set. Each of the portraits is followed by one or two pages of text describing the her family. Hardcovers bound in 3/4 red calf with raised bands and red marbled paper-covered board. All edges marbled. Raised bands on the spines, which have red and green leather labels. Elaborate gilt rules and tooling on the spines. The bindings show light to moderate rubbing and wear. A sound set, although there is a slight crack in the gutter between pages 62 and 63. Each volume has a tipped-in photo as a frontis. Text is a little toned and has some occasional pencil markings in the margins. An attractive set.
