A married set in very good condition. Second edition, 1758, London. Original full leather boards. Volume 1 has a new spine (sometime in last 50 years) by Edward F. Gruver, Washington, DC. V.1 has bookplate and pencil notations of prior owner and booksellers, no other markings. The first four leaves after the map are loose at the bottom and remain attached at the top. Volume 2 has the original binding, no interior markings of any kind. Numbered 5 of the 95 copies quarter bound in vellum of the total of 320 copies printed. 50 specimen pages mounted on brown paper at the rear. Although not stated this is the copy which belonged to Stephen Marks who is listed on the list of subscribers at the rear of the volume. Pages are top edges gilt. With the paper covered slipcase, although this has tears and marks to the paper. Loosely inserted is a typed letter signed by John Randle, a compliments slip and printed list of titles available at the time of going to press. A large and heavy volume, extra postage will be required to send it outside the UK..

Georg Fabricius was an important 16th-century Protestant German author who is responsible for some of the best editions of Greek and Roman classics such as Terence, Virgil, and Horace. He published a number of sacred poems as well in which he sought to completely avoid all traces of paganism.

Emmanuel Schelstrate was a 17th-century Catholic clergyman known for being the Vatican Library librarian. While working in the Vatican, he wrote a number of works discussing various aspects of the Catholic Church including decrees of the popes, as well as reports on the Council of Constance which discuss the ecclesiastical powers that were determined in the fourth and fifth sessions of the 15th-century ecumenical council.

His philosophical works and letters are considered the most reliable source of information for the period leading up to the fall of the Roman Republic. The works of Cicero have been published in numerous languages and formats from as early as the mid-15th-century.

This Latin set was published by Peter Van der Aa in Lyon in 1692 and was edited by the famous Dutch scholar Jacob Gronovius. It contains Cicero's philosophical orations. Gronovius included the contributions of Janus Gruterus and Janus Gulielmus.
