Description:
1654 1st ed Works of Saint Dorotheus of GAZA Syria Palestine Monastics Monks
Saint Dorotheus of Gaza was a 6th-century monk from Syria/Palestine who wrote several instructional treatises for the other members of his monastery. These works were written as directions on spiritual living - stressing the importance of obedience, silence, reading the scriptures, character of God, and overcoming temptation and human vices.

This 17th-century French version of writings of Dorotheus includes many of the spiritual doctrines written by Giles of Assisi, 13th-century saint. This edition is believed to be translated into French by Francois Bouton.

1690 1st ed History of WIGS & Headwear Hats Perruques French Clergy Jean Thiers

Jean-Baptiste Thiers was a 17th-century French clergyman, who curiously, is best known for a treatise on the history and use of the wig. During his tenure at the Diocese of Chartres, there was a prohibition established on the ecclesiastical use of wigs. Thiers wrote this work to discuss the evolution of wigs and other headpieces and sought to show why they should be allowed. He covers hair barrettes, square caps, capuchins, chainmail aventails, and other forms of protective and cosmetic headdresses.

1682 LAW 1ed Life of Matthew Hale England English Civil War Dissenters Burnett
Matthew Hale was a 17th-century English judge who was an influential figure in the legal proceedings against offenses to the royal crown in England. Author Gilbert Burnett published the best account of life of Hale – a biography which covers the entirety of Hale's young life through his judicial career and eventual death. Curiously, Burnet gives special attention to Hale's sympathy toward dissenters, which was particularly interesting considering the climate at the height of the English Civil War.

1723 1ed Sermons of Ofspring Blackall Bible Commentary on Sermon on Mount Exeter

Ofspring Blackall was a 17th-century English bishop whose works stirred much controversy throughout his career. However, many of his sermons proved non-controversial at all including his sermons found in his complete works.

Shortly after Blackall died, his complete sermons were edited published in London in 1723 by William Dawes. These sermons, which mostly consist of commentary on Jesus's 'Sermon on the Mount' provide context to each of the portions of Christ's famous sermon. It also contains an interesting sermon on the 'Manner of Keeping Christmas'.

This 1723 first edition contains two, complete folios! An impressive collection of 18th-century sermons!

1696-1731 1ed Baruch Spinoza Philosophy Fenelon Boulainvilliers Metaphysics Primarily remembered for his novel "The Adventures of Telemachus", Francois Fenelon was a French archbishop of Cambray who wrote a number of poems and essays. However, one of his lesser-known works was his collecting of other works which refuted the writings and philosophical thought of Baruch Spinoza. "Refutation des Erreurs of Spinosa" contains essays by Henri Boulainvilliers, Colerus, Orobio, and Francois Lami, as well as Fenelon's own thoughts; however, only about ten pages of this entire book were original to Fenelon. This book contains the principles of Spinoza's metaphysical and philosophical thoughts as well as the responses of these highly influential European philosophers toward Spinoza. Written at the end of the 17th-century by the Church of England, "The Reformed Gentleman" was the church's survey of
"degeneracy of the present age" following "the guilt of [England] in general aggravated in that neither God's Mercies can win it, nor his judgments terrify it into a serious reformation". (Introduction)
The anonymous author, known only as "A.M." discusses the prevalence of swearing and cursing, drunkenness, uncleanliness and sexual perversion, and breaking the Sabbath. It also offers advice to ministers on how to properly handle these issues within the church.
