Description:
1675 Confessions of Saint Augustine Catholic & Protestant Bible Theology Elzevier

Augustine of Hippo was a 5th-century early Christian church philosopher and theologian. While most known for his work 'City of God', he also wrote many other treatises on aspects of the Christian faith. His stance on free will vs. predestination and fatalism was supported by and still is supported by, the Catholic Church, as his teachings on free will are consistent with modern doctrine.

One of Augustine's most important works was 'Confessions' – a collection of shorter treatises that were autobiographical in nature. In fact, because of this, it is often considered the very first Western autobiography ever written.

This 1675 edition was published in Lyon by the famed Daniel Elzevier, edited by Henricus Somallius.

1848 US Sailor Life CAPT WILKES Expedition ANTARCTICA Exploration HAWAII Voyages
In "Lights and Shadows of Sailor Life," Joseph G. Clark recounts his fifteen-year maritime journey, chiefly detailing his experiences during the United States Exploring Expedition led by Captain Charles Wilkes. Clark shares gripping tales of the journey, including adventurous scientific expeditions to Antarctica and Hawaii, encounters with the locals in Fiji that almost cost him his life, and vivid portrayals of the rich landscapes of the Columbia River valley and California. He portrays both the exhilarating and perilous facets of sailor life, bringing to light the underappreciated roles sailors play in history and society. Through his eyes, readers are given a firsthand glimpse into a world filled with wonder, danger, and the raw beauty of the open seas.

1779 World Displayed Columbus Voyages Illustrated 120 Plates & MAPS Inca TORTURE

"Navigation, like other arts, has been perfected by degrees. It is not easy to conceive that any age or nation was without some vessel, in which rivers might be passed by travelers…but we have no knowledge of any ship that could endure the violence of the ocean before the ark of Noah."
― Samuel Johnson, "The World Displayed," Introduction.

An incredible set. Collected by John Newbery, "The World Displayed" is a collection of essays and writings from various writers on voyages from around the world. Samuel Johnson wrote an introductory essay to this work. This 15-volume set features 120 plates including a scene of Christopher Columbus describing the countries he had visited. The illustrations are impressive – especially those found in the first volume: views of Columbus's arrival in the New World, meetings with Spanish royalty, and views and descriptions of the indigenous tribes in America!
