1695 Numismatics 1ed Lowndes Silver Coins Great Recoinage Locke English Finance

In 1695, English Secretary to the Treasury, William Lowndes, published a report concerning a proposal to increase the mint prince of silver coins. This proposition was heavily contested especially by John Locke who published his own rebuttal – a view which would be adopted by the English government as the standard for coinage. This event would become known as the Great Recoinage of 1696.

Description:
Tan calf spine with green title plate, gilt banding and title. Brown marbled boards. Rienzi, der letzte der Tribunen ( Rienzi, the last of the tribunes; WWV 49) is an early opera by Richard Wagner in five acts, with the libretto written by the composer after Edward Bulwer-Lytton 's novel of the same name (1835). The title is commonly shortened to Rienzi. Nicola Gabrini (1313 – 8 October 1354), commonly known as Cola di Rienzo or Rienzi, an Italian medieval politician and popular leader, styled himself as "tribune of the Roman people". For his demagogic rhetoric, popular appeal and anti-establishment (as nobility) sentiment, some sources consider him an earlier populist and proto-fascist figure. Having advocated the abolition of Papal power and the unification of Italy, Cola re-emerged in the 19th century as a romantic memory among leaders of liberal nationalism and was adopted as a precursor of the 19th-century Risorgimento. In original dust sheet. Blue cloth binding with gilt title on the spine and front board.
Helen Layfield Bradley MBE (20 November 1900 – 19 July 1979) was an English artist born in Lees, Lancashire, England. Her paintings, mostly in oils, typically depict life in Lancashire in the Edwardian era. She was born Helen Layfield at 58 High Street, Lees, a village on the outskirts of Oldham, Lancashire. She was educated at Clarksfield School, and from age thirteen at Oldham Art School, having won the John Platt scholarship. Despite this, she did not begin to paint seriously until she was in her sixties. In the 1960s she met fellow painter L. S. Lowry who encouraged her in the creation of a narrative style based on her own childhood memories. From 1965 she became as popular in the United States as in the United Kingdom and her paintings now sell at auction for tens of thousands of pounds. Many of her paintings feature a character called "Miss Carter", a woman who always wore pink. In 1971 Jonathan Cape… Read More

Rebound. Green calf spine and corners with black title plates, gilt lettering and gilt decoration. Green cloth boards. Supplied in a new protective box.
A superb copy rebound by Brian Cole This is a lovely well produced rendition of the work that made Thomas Bewick. A General History of Quadrupeds appeared in 1790. It deals with 260 mammals from across the world, including animals from "Adive" to "Zorilla". It is particularly thorough on some of the domestic animals: the first entry describes the horse. Beilby and Bewick had difficulty deciding what to include, and especially on how to organise the entries. They had hoped to arrange the animals systematically, but they found that the rival systems of Linnaeus, Buffon and John Ray conflicted, and in Linnaeus's case at least changed with every edition of his work. They decided to put useful animals first "which so materially contribute to the strength, the wealth, and the happiness of this kingdom". 200 wood-engravings by Bewick, 104 smaller vignettes,… Read More
