In 1695, English Secretary to the Treasury, William Lowndes, published a report concerning a proposal to increase the mint prince of silver coins. This proposition was heavily contested especially by John Locke who published his own rebuttal – a view which would be adopted by the English government as the standard for coinage. This event would become known as the Great Recoinage of 1696.

Helen Layfield Bradley MBE (20 November 1900 – 19 July 1979) was an English artist born in Lees, Lancashire, England. Her paintings, mostly in oils, typically depict life in Lancashire in the Edwardian era. She was born Helen Layfield at 58 High Street, Lees, a village on the outskirts of Oldham, Lancashire. She was educated at Clarksfield School, and from age thirteen at Oldham Art School, having won the John Platt scholarship. Despite this, she did not begin to paint seriously until she was in her sixties. In the 1960s she met fellow painter L. S. Lowry who encouraged her in the creation of a narrative style based on her own childhood memories. A superb copy rebound by Brian Cole This is a lovely well produced rendition of the work that made Thomas Bewick. A General History of Quadrupeds appeared in 1790. It deals with 260 mammals from across the world, including animals from "Adive" to "Zorilla". It is particularly thorough on some of the domestic animals: the first entry describes the horse. Beilby and Bewick had difficulty deciding what to include, and especially on how to organise the entries. They had hoped to arrange the animals systematically, but they found that the rival systems of Linnaeus, Buffon and John Ray conflicted, and in Linnaeus's case at least changed with every edition of his work. Highly regarded in the medical field, the author lectured at the Cooper Medical College (later to become Stanford University School of Medicine) in San Francisco on his visit to America in 1897.
