1878 EXQUISITE Fine Binding 1ed Saint Louis Renaissance France ART Illustrated

Henri Wallon's 'Saint Louis' is one of the most thorough biographical sketches on Louis IX of France. Wallon, however, writes on more than just the life of Louis IX. He describes French architecture, numismatics, politics, military, war, along with dozens of other topics. Other topics include Louis's interest in science and poetry, attempts at gothic art, music, and sculpture, Catholic devotion, and 13th-century French society.

This beautiful first edition of Wallon's 'Saint Louis' features an impressive collection of artworks from various artists including Paquier, Toussaint, Garcia, Hurel, Meaulle, and Soupey; nine of which are chromolithographs.

Large octavo, two folding plates, a frontispiece of the Royal Society Arms with licence leaf printed in the reverse, pp (12), 438, a little general age-toning and marking, double offsetting between title and frontispiece, but overall good and tight internally, orignal full panelled calf, at some point very neatly rebacked (barely discernible), new endpapers, the calf with some scuffing and rubbing and the upper cover rather unevenly faded. . Second edition. Full Leather. Good.

Illustrated with a colour frontispiece and 17 colour chromolithograph plates, 22 plain plates, several text illustrations. small thick octavo, pp viii, 431 + 1 advertisement page, a little age-toning and very occasional fox spots, very slightly used throughout, an address and date on the half-title (with the name neatly crossed out) - "Geo. Bertie Bird, Juy 8th 1897, Walton Rectory Loughborough", and a later signature - "H.H. Cousins, 3rd ocober 1928", simply bound in plain green cloth of a later date. SCARCE. . Third edition. Cloth. Good.

Salem, N.C.: Gedruckt bey Blum und Sohn, 1849. First Edition First Printing . Soft cover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Octavo. 8 pages. Bound in printed wrappers (the title page is the front cover) and housed in a 20th century stapled cardboard folder, secured very tightly in the binding with black cloth-tape. The paper is browned and has some wear or pest damage at the corner of the front cover and the following leaf. The translation into English is, "Report of the Evan's Activities. Tennessee Lutheran Synod, during its Ninth and Twentieth Session, held at the Becks Church, Davidson County, N.C. From October 20th to 23rd, 1849." Rare. Worldcat lists other reports from the Evangelical Lutheran Church that were printed in Salem, N.C. in the 1820s to the 1840s, but we have not found a copy of this report listed.

Just as fashion illustrator Louis-Marie Lante travelled through the French departments for Pierre de La Mésangère in the early 19th century, so publisher Aubert's artists visited towns and villages throughout France for this series. The illustrations were drawn by fashion-plate artists such as Francois Claudius Compte-Calix, Adolphe Varin, Marie-Alexandre Alophe, Jean-Joseph Bonaventure Laurens, Celestin Deshayes, and C. Maurice. Christian Ignatius Latrobe was a 18th-century English clergy best known for his studies and editions of famous works of classical music. However, his voyage to South Africa yielded his greatest literary achievement. Following his Moravian missionary voyage to the Cape of Good Hope, Latrobe published an edition of the journal he kept while in Africa with entries describing his experiences in settles such as Genadendal, Paardekop, Swellendam, and Groenkloof.

The Ladies' Diary: or, Woman's Almanack appeared annually in London from 1704 to 1841 after which it was succeeded by The Lady's and Gentleman's Diary. It featured material relating to calendars etc. including sunrise and sunset times and phases of the moon, as well as important dates (eclipses, holidays, school terms, etc.), and a chronology of remarkable events. The subtitle indicated its serious purpose: "Containing New Improvements in ARTS and SCIENCES, and many entertaining PARTICULARS: Designed for the USE AND DIVERSION OF THE FAIR SEX."
