The Leyden Museum, Leyden, Netherlands, 1889; Color lithograph of the reclusive Liberian Maned Owl (Bubo Letti Butt. or Jubula Letti Butt.), found only in small sections of lowland West African rainforests from Liberia to Republic Of Congo. An original plate from Notes From The Leyden Museum, official zoological periodical of the Reijksmuseum of Natural History, Vol. XI, No. 1, January, 1889, the issue in which Buttikofer first described and named the species. Drawn and lithographed by Theodoor Van Hoytema (1863-1917), renowned for his realistic natural history studies for the Reijkmuseum, as well as for his later art nouveau style commercial work. Excellent condition. Clean, bright, colors vivid. Archivally hinged and matted acid free with 100% rag museum board, ready for framing. Sheet size 6" x 9 3/8", window 5 1/2" x 8 1/4", outside matte dimensions 11" x 14". A beautiful and scarce print of an uncommon avian subject.

Edinburgh: David Douglas, 1890 A good to very good copy illustrated with numerous drawings by the author. In the original green cloth binding with gilt titles to spine. Top page edges gilt. The spine is faded with pulling and some fraying to the top and bottom. Both boards have slight marking with the back board having a small cloth scuff. Corners lightly bumped and with wear. Internally there is some early splitting at the front endpaper joint. Four volumes, octavo, illustrated with 192 colour plates, some intermittent foxing internally but nowhere too offensive, pages slightly age-toned, each front endpaper has a name neatly cut from the upper corner, and all endpapers have slight sellotape residue markings; red cloth in very good condition with extremely bright gilt lettering on the spines, the dustwrappers are slightly worn and chipped but not price-clipped and each with the publisher's price sticker of 18/-. They are now protected in a removable clear cover. Volume I - the fore-edge is slightly marked. Volume II - a small marginal tear to page viii and a slight mark to the inner margin of page 116. Volume III - slightly more foxing than the other volumes. Volume IV -a slightly open hinge at pages 96/97. Overall a quite attractive set.. New Edition. Cloth. Good/Slightly worn and frayed.

Morris's A History of British Birds was first published in monthly parts from June 1850, over a period of 7 years. Each part contained 24 pages of letterpress and 4 hand-colored plates. It was a resounding success. The inspiration for the book came from the renowned English printer, Benjamin Fawcett, who approached Morris to write the text when Morris became Vicar of Nafferton. The elaborate text and charming period graphics are marketed for children, and reflect the author's infectious passion for all things birds. The catalogue contains advice on attracting birds, dealing with cats and squirrels, trapping sparrows, keeping birds in winter, proper feeding of birds, etc.; as well as constructing specialized bird houses and bird baths. Birding is described as a family hobby, of which the child plays a major part. "Make friends with our native birds - that is my message.
