Straight, tight and clean with no markings, slight spine-end touches, text-block edges deeply tanned as is common with this book. Dustjacket unclipped bearing original price, slight spine-end, edge and corner nicks, two short closed edge tears to front panel, rear panel rubbed, in new Brodart sleeve. The classic modern novel, one of the earliest in the psychological thriller genre, and basis for the 1962 Robert Aldrich film, starring Bette Davis, Joan Crawford and Victor Buono.

First appearance first printing of this short horror story the has been made into two movies. The first starring Vincent Price in 1958. The second in 1986 starring Jeff Goldblum. The first edition PAN X434 was published in the UK in 1965 with a cover by Raymond Hawkey and "Not for sale in the in the UK", 250,000 copies were printed in July 1965.
The second edition of PAN X434 were printed in 1966 and shipped with a movie tie-in cover replacing the Hawkey scorpion and pearl cover. PAN Books had remaining stock of the first printing of 1965 with the Hawkey cover and applied a wrap of the movie tie-in edition to the remaining 1965 copies.
There is no record as to how many of these variants were shipped by PAN, the majority of the authentic variants discovered over the years have been found in Australia.
This a good unread copy, has tanned pages and foxing. The foxing is on the inside of the cover and first page, first page has a vertical tanning section where the wrap faces, this tanning supports the authenticity of this being the actual book shipped with the wrapper and not swapped out for another copy, there is a remains clipping to the front cover. Complete with mono illustrated title and twelve full page plates by Bedford. Gilt decorated green cloth boards illustrated with Peter Pan, two Mermaids and the Crocodile, all within a decorative border, on front board. Spine with lettering and illustration including Captain Hook, Peter Pan, two Mermaids and some Fairies, all stamped in gilt. Cloth and gilt are very bright and vibrant on the spine and front board. A remarkable, tight and fresh copy with a small neat previous owner name to the front free endpaper and a tiny amount of foxing to just a handful of pages. The endpapers have some offsetting as a result of the glue used in production otherwise this is a near fine and bright copy of this classic book in the rare publishers original dustwrapper.
