London: James Nelson & Co, 1860 A very good copy of the 3rd edition with 42 hand coloured plates. This copy has been rebound in plain buckram cloth with gilt titles to spine, and the endpapers have been replaced. The binding is sound and clean with some darkening to the spine and light corner wear. Contents: half title; title; contents and plate listings xii; introduction 2pp; text pp 3-211 with 42 plates; index pp 212-215. All the plates have tissue guards. Contents are in very good clean condition. The guard to plate 1 is torn and the bottom part is missing. Plate 13 has a wide gutter so the side edge is trimmed although the plant image is complete. There is some marking to the verso of p 215 (blank) and the occasional light mark or offsetting from the plates. The plates are clean and bright with the occasional stray paint spot or light mark.

Joseph Paxton was a 19th-century English gardener who is best-remembered for cultivating the banana in the Western world. In 1834, Paxton began publishing a botanical periodical – the 'Magazine of Botany' – in which Paxton and other writers provided in depth research, discussions, and information on all types of plants. And while the descriptions themselves and thorough, the full-page, color illustrations make the volumes from this work one of the most desirable botany works from the first half of the 19th-century.

1837 English Botany James Sowerby Color Illustrated Flowers British Plants RARE

In 1790, English naturalist James Sowerby published what would become the preeminent illustrated work on English botany. Simply titled, 'English Botany', this work was a complete compendium of the native plants in Great Britain. Sowerby provided beautiful illustrations accompanied by descriptions of the various properties, natural habitat, and other characteristics of numerous plants across Britain.
In tandem with Charles E. Sowerby, English botanist Sir James Edward Smith would later publish his own work on the subject, collaborating with and utilizing James Sowerby's popular floral illustrations. This specific edition includes 165 exquisite, hand-colored illustrations.

This book contains a collection of articles, poetry, and music for family entertainment. It is illustrated with twelve steel plate engravings and also with ten hand-colored portraits of flowers. The book has some foxing and water staining inside, but the color plates are clean and crisp. A new cloth spine has been added , and the covers show some wear. The color plates of flowers are quite beautiful.

1806 1ed George Don British Plants DRIED LEAVES Botany Herbarium Britannicum
George Don was a 19th-century Scottish botanist who is best-known for his literature on gardening and British plants. He was highly influenced by his peer John Loudon of whom he created supplements and commentaries to many of his works, including 'Hortus Britannicus'. This manifested itself in a work called 'Herbarium Britannicum' in which Don annexes the names and habitats of dried British plants.
This 1806 eighth 'fasciculus' contains actual dried leaves attached to each of the folio leaves!

Some foxing to the first and last couple of pages otherwise a clean copy throughout. One small tear to the bottom margin of the frontispiece, not affecting the image. Recent leather binding of half dark green morocco. Spine with raised bands, the compartments ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Marbled paper on boards. Neat previous owner bookplate mounted onto the inside read endpaper. A little rubbing to the binding but overall a very good copy.
