Minor loss to the lower blank outside corner of the first dozen or so pages, not close to the text; title page with small repairs. Some old dampstaining, mostly marginal and mostly rather faint. Nice, clean copy of this important book. First published in 1597, this is the second edition edited by Thomas Johnson (a reprint of the 1633 edition) who corrected many of Gerard's errors and who improved the accuracy of the illustrations by using Plantin's woodcuts. Thick Folio (9" x 13") bound in full early calf sympathetically rebacked with a new red morocco spine label; (36), 30, (29)-30, (29)-1630, (48) pages with a list of errata on the verso of the last leaf. [Germany: c1835]., 1835. 4to. 237 x 190 mm. 250 full-page watercolour drawings of flowers, each with ms. title in Latin & German & number. with 57 pp. manuscript in German containing a brief description of each flower & 5 pp. manuscript index. 19th century bds. (bit worn, a few spots of paper adhesion on first watercolour, lacking flyleaf & probably a manuscript title). An appealing collection of competently executed original botanical watercolours including depictions of begonias, irises, salvia, passionflowers, amaryllis, lobelia, paeony, California poppy, hibiscus, azalea, trillium,.browallia, &c. Apparently part of a larger work as the watercolours are numbered from 6201 to 6450, but unfortunately we are unable to offer any information regarding the author or the work, including whether or not it was ever published..

An attractive and impressive botanical print by the husband and wife collaboration of Nicolas and Genevieve Regnault, from their work entitled 'La Botanique Mise a la portee de tout le monde ou Collection des Plantes D'Usage...'. The work illustrates both helpful (medicinal) and decorative plants. Blunt says " The most impressive French botanical work of the period". Size: 456 x 336 mm. Copperplate engraving with original wash colour. Very good condition.

Portland, Maine:: Rebecca Goodale,, 2012.. Edition of 5. 5.5 x 5.5 x 3". Paper ribbon of MacGregor handmade papers. Paste papers, hand coloring, and silkscreen prints. In drop hinge cloth-covered clamshell box. Title handpainted on lid in Latin. Title, number, edition, year, and signature on pastepaper lining lid interior. Another work in Rebecca Goodale's Threatened & Endangered series, which presents the threatened and endangered flora and fauna of Maine. In Maine the small water lily is considered to be in the threatened status.  Here the delicate lily pads and one bloom are attached to paper ribbon anchored to the box's bottom. Comprehensively cataloguing the origins, date of introduction and British gardens and their owners of foreign introductions during the golden age of plant-hunting, the Floral Register was the resource for all newly introduced plants.
Benjamin Maund (1790-1864) botanist and horticulturist, "he prospered as a bookseller, stationer, printer, bookbinder, publisher, and chemist in a combination normal for the time". London : Printed by J Davis [Vols I & II] and B Wilks [Vol III] for the Author, 1798 A very good copy of the complete 3 volume 1st edition including later Supplement, with 440 hand coloured plates on 436 leaves. This work was James Sowerby's follow up to his successful English Botany and he both drew, and engraved the plates and oversaw the colouring. He immersed himself in the study of mushrooms over the period of work, which was published between 1798 and 1809, including creating 200 models of larger species, and making his collection of specimens available to public view. In his introduction to the Supplement (which was issued without separate title) he states his concern that the identification of many individual species, with illustrations that focus only on perfect specimens, might confuse the public into eating poisonous fungi. His response was to illustrate a number of specimens rather than the 'perfect one' and to model a number of poisonous species for public inspection. This… Read More

New York: Green & Spencer, 1851. Leather Bound. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Quarto. [138], [6], iv pages. Bound in original full red leather with ornate cover designs embossed in gilt. The binding shows rubbing, bumping and wear but is quite sound. Rebacked in modern red leather with a largely plain spine bearing the title and a gilt roll at the headcap and foot and a small central device in the middle of the spine. Corners rebuilt with leather. All edges gilt. Modern faux marbled paper endpapers. Text is a bit toned, and there is foxing on the plates. Most, if not all, of the plates have their tissue guards. No volume number at the front of the book, but the general text ends on page 137 with "End of Vol. I" at the bottom of the page. An attractive, sturdy work.
