Faint dust soiling to spine, trace of normal offsetting to endsheet gutters, otherwise a fine copy in lightly worn slipcase. First edition. Introduction and captions to the illustrations by Bernard Windeler. Illustrated with twenty-three original copper engravings by Wadsworth, printed from the plates, both full-page and vignette, and some delicately handcolored. One of four hundred and fifty copies. Wadsworth was, of course, one of the original signators to the Vorticist manifesto and regrettably that tradition shows through only occasionally and briefly in these draftsman-like renderings. Of particular interest to this cataloguer is the probability that the author of the captions is the same B.C. Windeler whose ELIMUS, with illustrations by Dorothy Shakespear, was published in Pound's INQUEST series three years earlier.

In custom made cloth clamshell box. With 11 wood engravings by Buckland Wright, printed on Japanese paper. In this particular copy the wood engravings are tipped in on the pages which is unusual. As this copy is inscribed by John Buckland Wright it might well have been a (proof) copy for the artist. The illustrations represent female figures engraved with a single clever line. The colophon merely states: "From a friend of the illustrator and printer". Inscribed on the colophon page by John Buckland Wright to the Dutch poet and critic Jan Greshoff. JBW came in contact with the publisher Stols through Jan Greshoff in 1929. He engraved Greshoff's portrait for his collection of poems that was published in 1934. A."), 4 engraved vignette illustrations in the text, quarter leather binding, with matching leather corners, marbled boards, title in gilt on spine (insignificant shelf wear to edges of binding, and mild foxing in margins of the plates; none of these affecting contents).

In a second section of the book are "Remarks On the Ancient and Modern History of Istria and Dalmatia, Elucidatory of the Origin, Manners, and Customs of the Present Inhabitants."

Pola is a city on the Adriatic, on the Istria Peninsula. At one time it was part of Italy, but now is in Croatia.

Modern Painters (1843–1860) is a five-volume work by the eminent Victorian art critic, John Ruskin, begun when he was 24 years old based on material collected in Switzerland in 1842. Ruskin argues that recent painters emerging from the tradition of the picturesque are superior in the art of landscape to the old masters. The book was primarily written as a defence of the later work of J. M. W. Turner. Ruskin used the book to argue that art should devote itself to the accurate documentation of nature. In Ruskin's view, Turner had developed from early detailed documentation of nature to a later more profound insight into natural forces and atmospheric effects. In this way, Modern Painters reflects "Landscape and Portrait-Painting" (1829) in The Yankee by American art critic John Neal by distinguishing between "things seen by the artist" and "things as they are". Helen Layfield Bradley MBE (20 November 1900 – 19 July 1979) was an English artist born in Lees, Lancashire, England. Her paintings, mostly in oils, typically depict life in Lancashire in the Edwardian era. She was born Helen Layfield at 58 High Street, Lees, a village on the outskirts of Oldham, Lancashire. She was educated at Clarksfield School, and from age thirteen at Oldham Art School, having won the John Platt scholarship. Despite this, she did not begin to paint seriously until she was in her sixties. In the 1960s she met fellow painter L. S. Lowry who encouraged her in the creation of a narrative style based on her own childhood memories. From 1965 she became as popular in the United States as in the United Kingdom and her paintings now sell at auction for tens of thousands of pounds.
