Interestingly, there is a scrap of paper laid in which is signed by the author (this appears to be the return address torn from the wrapper in which the book was originally shipped. "A souvenir of the 50th Anniversary of the Red River Expedition and the Formation of the Province of Manitoba". Book about Louis Riel. London: Sampson Low, Son & Marston, 1869. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First Printing of the First Edition. Very good, withwear to extremities, moderate soiling to covers, and "Arcade Library 1869 " on ffep.. colour frontis., and minor foxing. A solid copy.

Book has an errata sheet slipped in. It has 8 maps (8 plates) all perfect, all numbered, all protected by a tiussue in which is printed in red the plate number and title, and all dated betwen 1768 and 1792. The book has no writing inside, no dirt, no defects. It is in near fine condition for its age,but has a piece of paper strip missing from top of spine. I highlight that in one of the scans.
The author has signed "from C.F.Newcombe" at the top of the front cover, gifting the book. Newcombe as a noted naturalist and a volunteer at the Provincial Library.

A rare first printing of the life of James Fitzgibbon who had the unusual distinction of receiving the Naval General Service Medal for the action at Copenhagen whilst serving as a private soldier in the 49th Regiment on board HMS Monarch but did not receive a Military General Service Medal for his more significant contribution to the war in Canada in 1812-14, being not present at any of the actions for which clasps were awarded. Gilt decorated and lettered light brown cloth, spine lightly faded and leans slightly, corners bumped, interior largely clean, some minor foxing to prelim pages and one or two juvenile pencil marks, mainly to the back of illustrations, an illustration missing between pages 72 and 73, fold-out facsimile of letter creased

Recently bound in period-style red half-morocco over paper-covered boards, with raised bands and gilt title-labels to spines. Edges toned and uncut (indeed the signatures are in the greater part unopened). Some mild intermittent foxing and staining to text in the main two volumes, with heavier staining and old (1823) owner's name to title-page in the General Introduction volume, but in all very bright and near fine. Otherwise clean, tight and unmarked. Very neat -- a sound and very handsome set. Large folding map in Volume I well-preserved and bright with just a short closed tear (1 cm.) near stub. Small map in Volume II fine and partially hand-coloured. Engraved title-pages in Volumes I & II; half-title present in General Introduction volume.
