A FORE-EDGE PAINTED book printed in Bath, England by Richard Cruttwell in 1818 and bound in gilt-stamped green leather, with six compartments on the spine, gilt dentelles on the leather turn-ins, all edges gilt. The fore-edge is finely painted, and depicts a river in the Holy Land. Thomas Wilson was Bishop of Sodor and Man between 1697 and 1755. There is a gilt-stamped green leather "bookplate" on the inside cover showing Jane Rowley 1818. This may be Jane Fuller Rowley (1736-1819) of Connecticut. Please view the photographs. It was filmed in 1992 for the Ray Bradbury Theater television series. Bradbury, author of Fahrenheit 451 and The Martian Chronicles, is one of America's most celebrated science fiction, fantasy and horror writers. In this story, an American author visits a Dublin pub where he is caught up in the excitement over a local sporting event known as "anthem sprinting." Runners compete to see who can exit the theater fastest during the few seconds between the end of a film and the start of the Irish National Anthem. Handwritten changes by the author on a couple of pages (see photos). Included is a signed letter from Bradbury.

The Odyssey is Pope's 1725 translation. It is number 366 of 1300 copies. Both books are bound in full morocco, with spines having five raised bands with gilt titles, and measure 10 ½" by 6". No Binding. Fair/No Jacket. This rare folio is composed of 15 lines of the Quran, in Arabic, on parchment. It was probably created in the 9th century in northern Africa. Calligraphy was an important Arabic art form, seen on ceramics, coins and manuscripts. The highly angular horizontal Kufic seen here was the primary script used in the earliest copies of the Quran from the 7th through the 10th centuries. Diacritical marks indicated by red dots are guides to pronunciation. CONDITION: Loss to the bottom right corner affecting the last three lines. Hole affecting the bottom 4th line.
