Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and nine engraved plates, thick 12mo, pp liv, 571, slight age-toning throughout, the plates are a little foxed with slight staining at the margins, otherwise the contents are very clean and tight, the book has probably been recased, as the sensitive yellow endpapers are very clean, otherwise this is a surprisingly good copy in the original cloth, very slightly rubbed and marked, probably professionally strengthened at the head and tail. A remarkably good copy of a book intended for daily use.. Cloth. Very Good.

1750 Confectionary Cookbook MENON French Cuisine Cooking Dessert Candy Recipes

The Menon Cookbook is perhaps one of the most famous 18th-century cookbooks ever published. While the identity of the author is never revealed, he is generally referred to as Menon. While much better known for 'La Cuisiniere Bourgeoise', one of the best-known and oft reprinted cookbooks, he also published a confectionary cookbook, "La Science du maître d'hôtel". This book contains over 600 recipes for jams and jellies, marmalades and preserves, mousse, ice cream, syrups, biscuits and cookies, and much more!

This impressive 1750 first edition was published in Paris by Paulus-du-Mesnil.

1997. 4to size metal ring bound softcover; 133 glossy pages followed by a two-page recipe index. Most of the paintings are in full color, many are full page. Front cover is a full color full-page self portrait of the artist/author. Back cover is black leatherette. Arnold Greenfield (1918- 1996) was an attorney and lifelong painter. This collection was in the final editorial stages when Greenfield died in the fall of 1996. His family helped to finish and have privately printed this collection of recipes and paintings. One of the paintings was done by Greenfield wife, the pianist, music teacher, founder of the Fine Arts Conservatory in Miami, professor and civil rights pioneer Ruth Greenfield (1923 - 2023.) Menon is known to include fewer seasonings and ingredients that are cheaper thus creating a sense of 'lower-class' food; even though Menon focuses on beautiful and eye-appealing dishes.

This book was used in the British Indian family kitchens of Richard Bourke, 6th Earl of Mayo, 4th Viceroy and Governor-General of India. After Mayo's death this book along with other family items was returned to Ireland where it was dumped into storage.

Mrs. Beeton's Book of Household Management, also published as Mrs. Beeton's Cookery Book, is an extensive guide to running a household in Victorian Britain, edited by Isabella Beeton and first published as a book in 1861. Previously published in parts, it initially and briefly bore the title Beeton's Book of Household Management, as one of the series of guidebooks published by her husband, Samuel Beeton. The recipes were highly structured, in contrast to those in earlier cookbooks. It was illustrated with many monochrome and colour plates.
Although Mrs. Beeton died in 1865, the book continued to be a best-seller. The first editions after her death contained an obituary notice, but later editions did not, allowing readers to imagine that every word was written by an experienced Mrs. Beeton personally.
