Boston & Charlestown, MA: Free Democratic State Committee & Republican Club, 1854. Leaf. Very Good. Two early contribution receipts; one from the Boston Republican Club in 1856 and the other from the Free Democratic State Committee of Massachusetts in 1854. The Free Democratic Party was one of several splinter political parties (e.g., Liberty Party, Free Soilers, etc.) that formed in opposition to the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, which repealed the Missouri Compromise and opened up the new territories of the United States to slavery. The Free Democratic Party quickly banded together with other anti-slavery parties to form the Republican Pary in 1855. The Free Democratic Party receipt was printed by J. S. Potter & Company; the Republican Party receipt is manuscript. Both receipts are made out to Oliver Smith, a prominent Massachusetts businessman, philanthropist, and statesman.

(Wright also mentions a (presumably later) 147 p. version printed in double columns). Rust-colored embossed cloth with gilt spine lettering. Moderate shelfwear, with frayed spine ends. The spine is slanted. There is a short tear on the rear hinge. Previous owner's name is penciled on the second free endpaper. Some leaves have small dampstains on their fore margins. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

With eight full-page paper-weaving samples, each in two colors of paper (green, brown, pink, blue, black, white, etc.) Slight dampstaining to edges of wrappers. Contemporary ink ownership signature of a Mary Webb and date to front cover. Internally quite clean and attractive. A very good example of a fragile Froebel gift album. This is a colorful and well-executed example of Froebel gift fourteen. The techniques shown here include weaving in straight rows and columns, zigzags, and perpendicular designs, as well as attractive color-matching within the samples. The album also shows a difficulty progression from basic patterns to the more complicated designs.

Palma de Mallorca, Spain: Divers Press, 1955. Original Wrappers. Near Fine/Near Fine. Cover: Dan Rice (designer), Arthur Okamura (artist). First Edition of Blackburn's first collection of poetry. Fragile illustrated wrappers screenprinted over newsprint are rarely seen in this condition. Paul Blackburn was a poet, involved with Beat poets, as well as a translator of Latin American literature by Octavio Paz, Federico Garcia Loca, Julio Cortezar and Pablo Picasso. Blackburn was a strong and active supporter of poetry and poets, especially fledgling poets. His influence on the poetry world and Spanish/Latin American literature (from the 1950's to his death in 1971) is immeasurable. 8 x 6½". 24 pp. Very minor chipping to top and bottom tips of cover, some offset toning to end pages, else a Near Fine copy.

With a couple of ink annotations in a contemporary hand relating to earlier land transactions of Chaissain(?) and G. & R. Morris. Map supported with posterboard and protected with plastic sleeve. 1855 Single Sheet. 18 1/2 x 24 inches. Being territory about 25 miles northeast of Watertown, N.Y. and 65 miles north of Utica, lying in the townships of Antwerp, Philadelphia, leRay, Wilna and Diana, an area which includes present-day Fort Drum and remains one of the most sparsely populated in the state. The land has been divided here into approximately 900 numbered lots of 440 acres each. The routes of the Odgensburg and the St. Lawrence turnpikes are given, as is the "Military Road" from Sacketts Harbor to Ogdensburg passing through Alexandria to the west. INSCRIBED by Richard Eberhart (with his initials) to a colleague on the first interior page. 8vo, 16pp, stapled wrappers. A rare publication of this address delivered at Wheaton College in April 1952. Unmarked copy, a little outer soil, institutional gift label to inside front cover (no other markings).

[Philadelphia: John Binns, 1828. Folio Broadside, 11" x 19." Printed in three columns, each separated by a rule. Macabre relief cuts of six black coffins within the title. Repaired horizontal and vertical closed tears on blank verso; several small holes have slight effect on several letters. Light toning. Good+ copy of a rare, dramatic broadside. "As we soon expect to have official documents in relation to the SIX MILITIA MEN, arrested, tried, and put to death, under the orders of General Andrew Jackson, this may not be an improper time to give to the public some of the particulars of the execution..." The source of those "particulars" is the account in John Binns's 'Democratic Press.' The primary weapon of the anti-Jackson forces was his alleged impetuous, unrestrained, martial personality, utterly unsuitable for the presidency of a democratic republic whose success required respect for constitutional checks and balances. Detroit: Compliments of Col. August Goebel /Zickel Brothers Music Publ. , 1900. Musical Score : Printed music : Marches 1 score (3 pages). RARE. Early example of sheet music used for advertising, and a great piece of beer brewing history. Red, black and white lithographic cover art with two black and white photos of The Goebel Brewing Company printed rear cover. The Company brewed in Detroit from 1873 to 1964, other than during Prohibition, and its beer was sold until 2005. Born in 1839 in Prussia, August Goebel Sr. fought at Bull Run and rose through the ranks to become Colonel by the end of the war. He died in 1905. OCLC locates only the Library of Michigan with a copy, although online search locates a copy at the Detroit Historical Society. Very Good, small edge tears, creases, prior owner name in ink at top margin front cover. . First Printing. One Sheet, Folded. Very Good/No Jacket, As Issued. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall.
