This 1784 edition includes the second part of this famous work, dealing with life in prison, which was to be destroyed by the Prussian authorities at the request of the French government, and may be considered rare. Vol. I: xviii, 386 pp; Vol. II: xvi, 311pp; Vol. III: xiv, 399 pp; Vol. IV: xv (1) 367 pp. 16 folding maps and plans of The Counties and Fortresses. Bound in full brown calf with gilt titles and decoration, dentilled/gilt dec. and 6 raised bands to the spines. The endpapers appear to be newer but not recent, and there are a number of handwritten notes on slips of paper tipped onto several pages. Light wear to the edges of the binding, loss of a small part of the spine label of Vol. II. & IV, but overall a very nice copy. Hardback bound in original quarter brown leather with brown marbled paper-covered boards. Red leather label on the spine as well as a gilt-stamped emblem of a "V" with scroll work and a banner beneath a crown. The binding shows moderate rubbing and wear and is sound. Hinges quite sturdy and supple. Marbled endpapers and all edges marbled. Prior owner's bookplate on the front pastedown of "Lewis St. Louis." Text is clean. After the main part of the text (first 200 pages) there are over 100 pages of printed facsimile of handwritten pages (original to the publication which appear to show a register of items, values, etc. Pages 277-319 have been printed as 3/4 pages so that the text at the top of page 321 serves as headers for the columns throughout the section.
