Description:
1693 1ed Life Louis of Bourbon Prince of Conde Huguenot v Catholic France Coste

Louis of Bourbon was a notable 16th-century Huguenot military leader who was the first Prince of the House of Conde. His life was led by much controversy including a Protestant conversion, secret plots against Francis II of France, and frequent skirmishes with the Catholic Church – which led to his arrest. The events of his life were best written by French author Pierre Coste in his book 'Life of Louis of Bourbon', more than 100 years following Louis's death.

This rare 1693 English first edition of Coste's account was translated out of the original French by Nahum Tate.

1640 Thomas Cranmer 1ed 39 Articles Henry VIII English Reformation Legum RARE

An extremely important first edition of 'Reformatio Legum Ecclesiasticarum', a work on ecclesiastical law when Henry VIII initiated the English Reformation and separation of the Church of England from the Catholic Church and papal rule. Thomas Cranmer was closely tied to the king, both politically and as a friend, and was an important figure in the development of this work. This work established laws and regulations for the church including prayer, music, testimony, excommunication, judicial cases, and political ties to the church. Other topics covered in this work involved domestic disputes such as divorce, as well as more controversial topics including calling nonconformity to the church 'superstitions and idolatrous'. (Hawkins II, 537).

This 1640 reworking of the 'Thirty Nine Articles' was translated out of the original English and into Latin by John Cheke, and, in 1553, was reportedly published in the name of King… Read More

Andrew Lang was a late 19th-century children's book author who is best known for his colored 'fairy books'. He and his wife recognized that fairy stories were immensely popular amongst young readers. According to the preface of "Princes and Princesses", Mrs. Lang says,
"There are some children who [say] that stories about fairies are true, and that they like fairies; and that they do not like true stories about real people who lived long ago."
The Lang's decided to publish a collection of true stories that would fascinate children – children who would primarily want to read exciting fictional stories. Notable stories found in this book include those of the lives of:
