A small tear to p. 85, but engraving unaffected. Damp stains to some pages, but otherwise in very good condition. This book chronicles the account of Second Anglo-Dutch Wars fought by the Dutch Republic and England during the period of 1664-1667 that ended in a peace treaty signed in the Dutch city of Breda. London: Richard Bentley, 1853. 2 Vol. 3/4 Leather over marbled paper covered boards, and eppr. First English edition of Alexandrine des Echerolles' memoirs of the Revolution in France. Alexandrine des Echerolles (La Ferte Hauterive, south of Moulins-Allier) was 13 y.o. when the Revolution forced her father, aunt and brothers to take refuge in Lyon. Her father had been elected colonel of the National Guards at Moulins, but when he was threatened with imprisonment he fled to Lyon then Switzerland, and left his daughter in the care of his sister. The aunt was murdered by the revolutionary court for refusing to reveal where her brother was living, and Alexandrine found herself alone, and relied on family and relations to taker her in.

New York: C. S. Hammond & Co., 1917-18. Five section map, each section 82 x 57 cm, each section divided into four folding parts mounted on linen backing. The five sections fit together to create a grand cartographic image 168 x 130 cm (51 x 66 inches). Scale 1:316,800 (five miles per inch). Stock toned along folds and edges, yet state of preservation is remarkably good. Sheets published weekly over a five-week period between December 1917 and January 1918, the map shows the state of the battle lines at the end of 1917, including railroads, boundaries, roads, principal wireless stations, waterways, canals, various fortifications, aircraft depots, and cities. Since the sections are mounted on linen, the news coverage on verso of the sheets is not visible.

1793 Joel Barlow Privileged Orders French Revolution Thomas Paine + Beer Brewing

Joel Barlow was an important 18th-century American diplomat who wrote several controversial treatises and pamphlets in which he supported the French Revolution. One such work was 'Advice to the Privileged Orders'. First published in 1792, this work was Barlow working through his promotion of the Revolution, offering advice who were seeking to understand answers against the government. This work became closely associated with Thomas Paine's 'Rights of Man', and the two were often studied in conjunction with one another.

London: Printed by T. Bensley, Bolt Court, 1808. Leather Bound. Good. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Folio. viii, 100 pages. The binding of the book measures 14 inches tall by 11 1/2 inches wide. Hardcover bound in early half red morocco with grey paper-covered boards. The binding is worn and bumped but sound. Some damping on the exterior of the front cover with part of the leather pushed back near the spine. Corners bumped and abraded. There is a dig in the leather on the spine near the headcap. Hinges rubbed but holding. A bookplate on the front pastedown is of "George E. R. Dalton" (George Edward Robert Dalton, Master Mariner) and is hand-dated 1906. The bookplate has a crest with a left-facing standing lion topped by a helmet and crown with the top of another left-facing lion above that. First Edition. London 1937. Scarce copy of the personal perspective of the Irish journalist and war correspondent Francis McCullagh (1874-1956) on the Spanish Civil War which was raging as he wrote.
In his account, he is unashamedly sympathetic to Franco and the Fascist cause and includes commentary on the Irish and Blueshirt involvement in the war.
The binding is tight. Book has age related shelf wear but boards are sound with slight soiling to rear cover and spine.
Gilt lettering on spine (a little faded). Spine extremities a little rubbed.
Text block is very good+.
Very light occasional spotting, otherwise leaves clean with no markings. Small black mark on lower edge not affecting leaves.
A very good copy. Very scarce.
