John Camden Hotten & George Routledge and Sons. London.,1869 & 73. FIRST EDITIONS. Two volumes. The first volume was first published by Hotten, as here, before being transfered to Routledge. Both volumes illustrated throughout the text by the author. Finely bound in contemporary half black calf. Spines with raised bands,red title labels, gilt. Compartments decorated in gilt.Black pebble grain cloth on boards. Marbled endpapers. All edges dyed red. Small (1.5 inch) split to the top hinge of first volume but still holding firm. Some rubbing to edges but overall a very good set in attractive early bindings.:

London: Macmillan, 1881. Hardcover. Very Good +. Vol. 1- 266 pages. Vol. 2- 298 pages. 6 x 9 in. Each volume in green half calf binding with marbled boards, spine with red, brown and black binding with gilt lettering and five raised bands, marbled end papers, top edge of text block gilt. Condition of the book is VERY GOOD+: Spine of each volume is in near perfect condition, covers show some wear esp. to corners. Small bookplate of David B. Ogden on inside of front cover, light foxing on edge of text block and on edges of a few pages in each volume, binding very tight. Vol. 1- has a water stain on cover, some light lifting of the marbled cover board and overall shows slightly more wear than Vol. 2.

First edition of Volume 1, 1737, London. Volume 1 of 2. Modern fine binding of quarter leather and marbled boards by Starr Bookworks. Interior is good. Library stamp on title page, some notations on preface, occasional pencil notes in text. Title page is backed with rice paper. Some edges chipped not affecting text. Last page is high quality facsimile. Paginates: [12], 420. Modern blanks. Extremely rare. OCLC locates 10 physical copies. Auction records do not find any sold at auction. London: The Cornhill Magazine , 1860. The first appearance of these essays, preceeding the 1861 book publicatios, the original publications in The Cornhill Magazine, are dated June-October 1860. In a fine early 20th c. full black morocco binding, gilt lettering and rules, four gilt decorations, one at each corner, four raised bands, ribbon marker, gilt-patterned end pages, the binding signed with the stamped initials O.B. at bottom front turn in. Paginated 1-20; (2 illus.): 175-192; (1 illus.): 257-278; (1 illus.): 385-406: (1 illus.) 4. Each with illustrations,14 in all, 5 of which are full page (those in parentheses) Following the Four Georges is a 4 page article from The Cornhill Magazine, dated January, 1923, titled "Esmond and General Webb: A Letter from Thackeray". The binding is Fine, contents Very Good, faint dampstain not affecting readability. . First Printing. Morocco. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

RARE First Edition in English, finely bound by Bayntun of Bath in half crimson morocco over marbled boards, spine with five harp decorations with gilt borders, marbled end pages, all edges gilt. xii, 499 pp., with fifty-seven wood engraved illustrations (including frontispiece and 23 plates). Near Fine, spine sunned, light rubbing to marbled boards, internally clean and bright. Gautier's classic work on chivalry, in which he set out the "Ten Commandments of Chivalry", of course hundreds of years after the time of medieval chivalry. "Thou shalt be everywhere and always the champion of the Right and the Good against Injustice and Evil". . First Edition. Half Morocco. Near Fine/No Jacket, As Issued. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Three volumes finely and sumptuously bound in early 19th c. unsigned crushed oxblood morocco, covers with gilt rules, wide entertwining gilt tooled patterned border and geometric tooled center panel, spine in five compartments with four gilt raised bands, three ornate gilt emblems and gilt lettering, cover edges and turn ins gilt ruled, page edges marbled. With 5 folding letter facsimile plates and one engraved plate of seals, the plates light scattered foxing. The bindings Near fine, small rubs at corners, internally bright and free of foxing or toning other than the aforementioned plates. A stunning set. . First Thus. Morocco. Two volumes in 19th-century half brown pebbled morocco over marbled boards, signed "Bound by Hayday", back lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, matching marbled end pages. Printed at the Chiswick Press. Very Good Plus, light rubbing to morocco, a few scattered spots of toning. A quite handsome set. . Fifth Edition. Half Pebbled Morocco . Very Good Plus/No Jacket, As Issued. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Longmans, Green, and Co. London. 1900. SECOND EDITION, published November 1900, the month after the October first edition. 8vo. (7.6 x 5.2 inches). xiv, 409pp. Portrait frontis, with tissue guard, and ten maps & plans throughout, including large fold-out colour map at end. A fine clean, bright copy, recently bound in half dark blue morocco. Spine with raised bands, decorated with gilt piping. Navy blue cloth to boards. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. A fine copy. The binding isn't signed but is certainly the work of a master bookbinder.

(8.8 x 7.2 inches). iv,154pp,i (Colophon). Decorative wood-cut Initial letters and borders on the text pages. Neat two line inscription on the title page. Early leather binding of half dark blue morocco. Spine, which has been re-laid, ruled lettered and decorated in gilt. Double gilt ruled lines on the morocco edges bordering blue cloth panels on the boards. Marbled endpapers with a strip of plain paper to both inner hinges where the book has been professionally re-cased. Top edge gilt. Some rubbing to the edges of the binding. A beautifully produced edition in the arts and crafts style of the period, in a skilfully repaired but very good quality and still attractive early leather binding.

Gay and Bird. London. 1904. LIMITED EDITION. Small 8vo. (5.2 x 3.3 inches). One of 60 copies printed on Japanese vellum, numbered and signed by the Publishers. Portrait frontis and a handful of head and tail pieces by Herbert Cole. Finely bound in early full dark brown morocco by Zaehnsdorf. Raised bands on spine, each with gilt piping. Compartments ruled lettered and decorated in gilt. Gilt double ruled borders on boards with elaborate floral corner pieces. Board edges ruled in gilt. Burgundy silk endpapers. Decorative gilt tooled borders and floral design to turn-ins. Top edge gilt. A fine and attractive binding.

Longmans, Green and co. London. 1889. THIRD EDITION. 8vo. (7.4 x 5.6 inches). Frontis and ten full page mono plates, plus 52 smaller engravings throughout the text. A few pages with marks and spots but overall a very good copy in a fine early full leather binding, by Sotheran & Co, of full burgundy Morocco. Spine with raised bands, each ruled in gilt. The compartments fully decorated and lettered in gilt. Decorative and ruled gilt borders to the boards. Decorative gilt roll to board edges and inner dentelles. Attractive floral gold and green endpapers. All edges gilt. Blue silk page marker. Some rubbing to edges but overall a very good copy. ---- Previous owners bookplate on front pastedown endpaper - A. E. Ledger Hill, perhaps a relative of the late nineteenth century Hampshire and England Cricketer A. J. Ledger Hill.

London: Richard Bentley, 1866. Volumes I and II published 1859, Vol. III, 1866. SCARCE in the three volume set. In unsigned fine binding of half red morocco over marbled boards, gilt back, marbled end papers, tops gilt. Near Fine, a few rubs at raised bands of Vols. I and III, spines a shade darkened, scant toning at end papers, a quite handsome set. Lord John Russell (1792-1878) served as Prime Minister of the England from 1846 to 1852 and again from 1865 to 1866. . First Edition. Half Morocco. Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Victor Gollancz Limited. London. 1938. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. (7.9 x 5.4 inches). Some very minor browning to the page edges, as is common with the cheap paper used in this book, and a couple of pages with a crease to the outer corner of the page, otherwise a very good copy finely bound in recent full black morocco, spine with five raised bands, the compartments lettered, ruled and decorated in gilt. Top edge gilt.
