Edward Moxon. London. 1848. NEW EDITION. Large 8vo. (9.5 x 6.4 inches). Text in double columns. Portrait frontis and extra title page with engraving of Christ's Hospital. A fine copy in an attractive early binding by W H Smith, of half brown morocco. Spine with raised bands. Compartments lettered, ruled and fully decorated in gilt. Green cloth on boards. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Spine a little darkened to edges but overall a lovely copy in a fine and very attractive early twentieth century leather binding. This volume contains the literary works, as well as the letters of Lamb.

Two volumes, octavo, pp ix, (11), 402; viii, (16), 541, rather age-toned, slight marginal staining, the first title page is repaired and strengthened to its fore-edge, pages 305 - 346 in the first volume are slightly bruised to the fore-edge with resulting slight tears to a few of those pages, otherwise this set is clean and sound internally, recently bound in a very attractive black half calf and marbled boards, the spines with raised bands, panelled, blind-stamped. Presentation copy to Thomas Young, inscribed on the second title page "with the author's kind regards". RARE. A little book of gratulatory sonnets, madrigals, and anancreontics written for the occasion of the wedding of Count Cristoforo di Rovero and Countess Zenobia d'Onigo, at the count's villa at San Zenone, near Bassano. The villa was the site of something like a salon, as di Rovero regularly invited collections of notable guests for extended stays in the country. Giuseppe Remondini, the head of the great printing, print-making, paper-decorating, and dyeing concern based in Bassano, was a close friend and frequent guest. An engraved frontispiece and title page vignette by Corbin after Laurent, large octavo, pp viii, 141,(i), all edges gilt, a small marginal stain to the lower corners of the frontispiece and title page, a contemporary name of Sundorne on the title page, otherwise just a little age-toned internally, marbled endpapers, bound in a fine straight-grain green morocco, gilt decoration at the borders, inner dentelles gilt, the spine gilt decorated, a little scuffed rubbed and marked, the spine a little dull. The page size is 14 x 23 cms, so this seems to be an unusal large paper copy. It is certainly very generously margined. [With the bookplate of John Corbet, 1751-1817, of the Sundorne Estate, who was an English sportsman of the Shropshire landed gentry and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1775 to 1780. Vol.1; xii, 287pp - Vol.2; iv, 275pp. Bound in contemporary full tree calf with gilt ruling and red morocco volume numbers and title labels to spines. Trinity College Dublin arms in gilt to all four boards. Copper engraved College prize labels mounted onto the front pastedown endpapers of each volume. The books were presented to Gulielmo (William) Spedding in 1830. --- Reverend William Spedding (24th March, 1803 - 14th June, 1870) spent 25 years as the Military Chaplain to the Artillery Garrison, co. Cork, and then became the Rector of Killencoole, co. Louth, Ireland. ---- Some foxing to many pages and area of loss to the outer corner of one leaf in volume one, otherwise text complete. Rubbing to edges and chipping to the spines of the bindings but overall a good set.

Fine clean books which have been finely bound in recent half red morocco leather, spines with raised bands, the compartments lettered and decorated in gilt. Top edges gilt. Red cloth on boards. A little uniform fading to the spines but still overall a near fine set.

A fine, bright copy bound in recent full dark green morocco leather binding. Spine with raised bands, ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Single gilt ruled border on boards. Top edge gilt. A lovely copy.

This is copy number 78 of only 100 copies for sale (there were another 10 copies for presentation) initialled by the printer, Ridley Burnett. A fine bright copy which is a beautifully produced facsimile of the famous Kelmscott Press edition of 1893. Finely hound bound in full white limp vellum, lettered in gilt. Green silk ties which were specially woven for this edition by H. Caldicott of London. With a short booklet about the 1893 edition, again limited, numbered and this initialled by Harold Smith and Ridley Burnett. Grey paper wraps with silk tie to the hinge. The two volumes are Housed in the publishers original grey paper covered slip case. A beautiful facsimile of a beautiful edition of Shakespeare's Poems in fine condition.

A 1906 Reprint prompted by Bernard Alfred Quaritch, of his father's the 1st edition of1859 which consisted of 75 quatrains The authenticity of the poetry attributed to Omar Khayyam is highly uncertain. Khayyam was famous during his lifetime not as a poet but as an astronomer and mathematician. The earliest reference to his having written poetry is found in his biography by al-Isfahani, written 43 years after his death. This view is reinforced by other medieval historians such as Shahrazuri (1201) and Al-Qifti (1255). Parts of the Rubaiyat appear as incidental quotations from Omar in early works of biography and in anthologies. These include works of Razi (ca. 1160–1210), Daya (1230), Juvayni (ca. 1226–1283), and Jajarmi (1340).
