French History

Paris: Alexandre Mesnier, 1833.. Two volumes. [6],vi,307;[4],323pp. Mid 19th century mottled calf and boards, spines gilt extra, half-titles bound in. Some modest foxing, bindings lightly rubbed at edges, with small scuff to one joint; a good set, in an interesting binding. First edition. Bazin (1797 - 1850), left the practice of law for historical pursuits, and this work is highly regarded for the portrait it provides of the "Monarchie de Juillet." Of special note is the essay describing the cholera outbreak in Paris.

Paris: by J Smith at the English Press, 1802. xxxi and 286 pages. Contemporary calf a little worn; text evenly browned throughout; untidy notes on the endpapers. 'The English Press' churned out translations for British tourists in the interval of peace after the Treaty of Amiens. In line with Napoleon's new policy of trying to lure the emigres home, this book is much more sympathetic to the royalists than earlier ones like Westerman (1794) and Danican (1796). French Algeria lasted from 1830 to 1962, under a variety of governmental systems. France invaded Algeria in 1830 and from 1848 until independence in 1962, the whole Mediterranean region of Algeria was administered as an integral part of France, much like Corsica and Réunion are to this day.
Author John Reynell Morell published an account of the history of French Algeria, discussing the French colonization of Algeria, Arab and Turkish cultures, and various battles in Algeria.

It does so in an extremely structured manner. Of each administrative region the precise geographic and topographic values are given, after which the specialization in natural or industrial productivity of these regions is described. Five volume complete set entirely in French. Books are in excellent condtion. They are the 5th and 6th editions of a work first published in 1858. The exception is volume 5 which was printed in 1875 without anly indication of edition number. The books are in excellent condtion. Covers are of marbleized hard board and leather. We could not find any faults in the pages of any of the books. They are clear, clean, without tears, folds, marks or foxing. The conditon differance relate to the covers and are minor. Esprit de Raimond de Mormoiron was a 17th-century French military writer known for his role in the Battle of La Marfee during the Thirty Years' War as well as the more famous Naples Revolt of 1647. In the summer of 1647, Spanish rule placed numerous excessive taxes on the locals of Naples which spurred a violent, months-long revolt. Mormoiron's first-hand account of the Naples Revolt has long-been one of the best accounts of the uprising and is an important source on the feudal and political climate of Spanish and Neapolitan nobility during the Thirty Years' War.

[Original manuscript], [c.1805]. Original ink manuscript letter. 30 x 22.2cm. The paper watermarked with a French imperial eagle and the name of the papermaker "Poviata". Small ink stamp "Bibliotheca Lindesiana" to the lower-right corner, indicating that the letter was once part of the great library formed by the Lindsay family, Earls of Crawford and Balcarres. Condition is very good with a couple of minor chips to the blank lower margin, two light diagonal creases to the top-right corner, and an old linen mount to the left-hand margin where the letter was once inserted into an album. An unusual and evocative letter in which the young Dominique Joseph Robaglia, aged just sixteen and a half, from Napoleon's own birthplace of Ajaccio, Corsica, asks the emperor to admit him to the school of Artillery (presumably at the École Militaire in Paris, where Napoleon had himself trained to become an artillery officer as a young man).Addressed "Sire", the letter states: "Robaglia (Dominique Joseph) aged sixteen… Read More
