The first book of this is the Eleventh Edition of what is commonly called PATERSON'S ROADS and was an indispensable resource which all coachmen carried to find their way through the towns, hills, dales and shires. 406 pp. includes index to County Seats. Later binding of rich vermilion calf, with raised bands, contrasting black spine label with gilt-stamped title and date. Marbled endpapers.Tight, bright copy. Bound together with the Seventh Edition of THE TRAVELLER'S DICTIONARY, consisting of 215 pp., and published in 1797. Eighteenth-Century editions are quite scarce. New York: L.H. Biglow & Co., printers, 1869. Paperback. Good -. 32 p.; 23 cm. Front wrapper reproduces title page within decorative border. The Lykens Valley Railroad and Coal Company was incorporated in Pennsylvania in 1830; Thomas P. Cope was the first president. It ran from Millersburg to Williamstown and was the fourth in the United States and the first in Dauphin County to carry anthracite coal. By 1845 the line had to be regraded and relaid. It merged into the Penndel Co. in 1956. Written at the head of the front wrapper: "Preserve with Care." Very scarce. In Good- Condition: wrapper is lightly soiled; front wrapper is detached but present, with closed 4-cm. tear from gutter edge; somewhat brittle, with chipping at edges and separations at gutters; a few notations internally; otherwise, clean.

Boston: Otis, Broaders, & Co, 1837. Hardcover. Near Fine. iv, 580 p.; 22 cm. Modern bonded leather spine and corners with gilt-tooled spine label; contemporary marbled paper over boards. Includes index. Advertisements for Hilliard, Gray, & Co. and the American Stationers' Co. on p. 568 (preceding index). Bookplate on front fixed endpaper of the Library of State Normal School, Salem, Mass. Topics discussed include: the utility of railroads in the United States; the prevalence and treatment of insanity in the United States; and the history of the Native Americans. In Near Fine Condition: boards are lightly rubbed; clean and tight.

This is a scarce, antique copy of "Taintor's Route and City Guides" - this particular guide is for the "Pennsylvania Coal Regions via Morris & Essex R.R." Published in 1867 by Taintor Brothers in New York. The guide features 4 color maps; the "Map of the Anthracite Coal Regions of Pennsylvania with Connecting Railways" is larger and folds out. "With sketches of the cities, villages, stations, scenery, and objects of interest along the route." There are illustrated advertisements at both the front and back. Please see the photos for the complete list of contents.Condition:The pages are in great condition - mostly clean and white with no writing and only some very sparse light foxing; tiny tear at the outer edge of page 29. The fold-out map is clean and firmly attached. The covers are present, but have detached from the spine and are separated along the right edge of the spine; creases at the left-hand corners of the front cover; there are a few tiny stain spots on the back cover.

With Smith's (d. 1921) bookplate and label on front inner wrapper. Smith was a Knight of Treliske, Cornwall. Light offsetting to title page from map, front wrappers somewhat soiled, light rubbing to spine but o/w near fine. Edwaard Osler [1798-1863] was called to Truro in Cornwall as editor of the 'Royal Cornwall Gazette.' Several special articles contributed by him to its columns, such as 'Packet Question: Falmouth or Southampton', were reissued in seperate form (Dictionary of National Biography).
