London & NY: John Lane, April,1916. . Vol. 1, No. 1. The first issue of this short-lived periodical. Folio: 29 X 47.5 cm. 58 pages. Pictorial wrappers. This copy is disbound, with some wear to the spine. There is some moderate soiling and edge wear to the outer wrappers, and a closed tear partway across the front wrapper (not touching text or illustration); basically very good otherwise. Internally the sheets are all clean, with no stains or blemishes. Sensational grotesques by Austin Spare, several double-page; also art by Charles Ricketts, Frederick Carter, Frank Brangwyn, and others. Literary contributors include De la Mare & Yeats.

Wellington: George Didsbury, Governemnt Printer, 1880. Folio, 64 fine plates of botanical line drawings, with accompanying text pages (unpaginated), the lower corner is a little bruised throughout, the title page is very slightly frayed, there is slight faint offsetting on to two of the plates, later green cloth with red morocco label, very slightly worn. Fery good, with lightly worn extremities, some rubbing to the marbled boards, minor foxing throughout, one loose plate in vol. 1and two loose plates in Vol. 2. Jean de la Fontaine was without question, the most widely read 17th-century fabulist, and perhaps could be rivaled only by Aesop himself. He wrote for what he intended to be a sophisticated French audience; however, his stories provided important lessons on morality for children and adults alike. Many of Fontaine's fables were adapted from those of Aesop and Phaedrus; though he did take liberties to make them his own.

Fontaine's 'Tales' (or 'contes') have not maintained the same popularity as his fables; however, they are no less desirable today. They differ from the fables in that they often contain more sexually explicit content and are not marketed toward a younger audience.

With three two-color intaglio prints. Designed, illustrated, printed, and bound by the author in an edition of one hundred numbered and signed copies; this is one of sixty which were for sale. Light wear to corners and edges, spine label curling slightly, with a lean to the spine and a touch of toning to page edges, still a very good copy of a fragile production. Fourteen severely brief three-line poems, with less austere and even playful illustrations. The author notes, "The purpose of these Triads is to offer something very near the ultimate in poetic simplicity. They aim to bring together two unrelated elements by a third in such a way that an unstated meaning may be suggested to the reader." Like all of the Gogmagog productions, an elegant and scarce book.

Georges de Scudéry was a 17th-century French author who published several historical novels including 'Alaric', a story of the 5th-century King of the Visigoths. Scudery writes this work of historical fiction describing the Visigoth attack and subsequent sack of Rome in 410AD.

Published in 1654, this impressive folio edition features 10 full-page engravings and, per the title of the work, was dedicated to Christina, Queen of Sweden.

A very good clean copy, finely bound in Nineteenth century full red calf binding. Spine with raised bands, brown title label, the compartments fully decorated in gilt. Three line gilt border on boards. Gilt inner dentelles. Top edge gilt. Previous owners bookplate on front paste down. Some staining to the boards (which doesn't extend inside the book) and a little rubbing to edges but still overall an attractive and finely bound book with original paper wrappers bound in at end.
