Twelve Fables of Aesop narrated by Glenway Wescott, illustrated with 18 linoleum blocks by Antonio Frasconi, designed and printed in three colors (black, gray, and red) on Rives mould-made paper by Joseph Blumenthal at the Spiral Press, New York, from hand-set Emerson type and from the artist's original blocks. The edition is limited to 975 numbered copies and 25 lettered review copies, all signed by Mr. Frasconi, Mr. Wescott, and Mr. Blumenthal. This copy is one of the 25 lettered copies (copy number "F"). In addition to the other three signatures, it is signed by Monroe Wheeler. In 1935 Wheeler was employed by New York's Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). The charm and joy of these traditional African American songs creates a folk lore history to be studied and enjoyed by old and young. Joel Chandler Harris used a dialect spoken by unschooled southern black slaves in the 19th century, which can be controversial among some readers. Historically, his stories, sayings, and characters remain of interest.
Condition: Condition of this all-original early edition of this folklore classic is very good. The dedicatee is Nina Froud who was a personal friend of the author and worked at his literary agency. The first book in the Paddington series where one of the most iconic and beloved British fictional characters first appeared, later going on to form the basis of several ongoing TV and successful film adaptations. This gorgeous book is a first edition of the combined titles, "Now We Are Six" and "When We Were Very Young" printed in 1932. Spine ends lightly rubbed, very minor bumping to corners and some slight soiling to boards and sunning to spine. No internal markings or dedications. Light pencil bookseller markings and price on FFEP. Twelve colour plates by original Milne artist Earnest Shepard with scores of smaller black and white drawings throughout.
