It was during his time in the British Isles that he gained an understanding of Scotland, which helped him write his most famous book 'The Scottish Friar. This book is a tale of the life and ecclesiastical history of George Leslie, a Scottish monk.

From the Irish Library of the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, William Humble Ward, Second Early of Dudley. This is one of a 124-volume collection of Irish-related titles, uniformly bound by Hatchards for the Earl, in 3/4 dark green morocco over green cloth, spine with raised bands, and six gilt-ruled compartments, enclosing titling and two each of lyre and shamrock designs, covers paneled in gilt, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers (spine faded to brown, minor wear). PROVENANCE: Bookplate of William Humble Ward, Second Early of Dudley, the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, later Governor-General of Australia; bookplate of Robert W. O'Meara.

Books are in very good condition. Slight wear on Vol II. bottom of spine.

Previous owner armorial bookplate (Isaac Holden, politician and inventor of a wool-combing machine, who received a Baronetcy in 1893) and also ink name and address stamped to the front blank free endpapers. Some foxing to the blank endpapers otherwise a very good bright and clean set throughout. All three volumes in fine nineteenth century bindings of full tan calf. Spines with raised bands, the compartments ruled and fully decorated in gilt. Red and green labels, gilt. Boards with double gilt ruled borders. Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled. Some minor rubbing to edges but generally a very good copy in attractive nineteenth century bindings. The bindings are unsigned but very high quality work.

In the wake of the Irish-Spanish defeat at Kinsale (1602), through army careers and the concession of nobility titles, Spanish kings placed the Irish exiled lords and gentry in an advantageous position on a par with the nobility in the early modern Spanish world. Imposition of orthodox Catholicism within the Spanish realms implied the social inclusion of certain 'nations' such as the Irish and the exclusion/repression of other groups who were not assimilatable into that society - Jews, Moriscos and Gypsies. A lovely copy of this powerful novel, set against the background of the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin.
