Thick 12mo, pp (10), 457, [45], 39, the title page a little soiled and with a faint splash mark, a little light staining, the occasional mark, lacking the front endpaper and a half-title (if called for), the joint at the title page cracked but not weak, a signature and date (1862) on the title page, the rear endpaper a bit soiled and with another early signature, otherwise remarkably clean and tight internally, full polished calf, the upper and lower covers blind-stamped marginally and with a single gilt line, the spine with blind-stamping and gilt decoration, slightly worn and rubbed. About this book
Michael James Whitty (1795 - 1873), newspaper editor and proprietor, native of Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, commenced his literary career in London, and among his earliest friends were Sir James Bacon and George Cruikshank. He published anonymously in 1824 two volumes of Tales of Irish Life stories which depict the customs and condition of the people of his homeland, and were a great success, being reprinted in America and also translated into French and German.

Compiled by the Weekly Irish Times. The second edition which appeared in 1917 with a price of sixpence net.
Binding is contemporary half calf over cloth bound boards. Gilt titles on spine. Very good condition showing little wear. 248 pages including advertisements. Leaves are browned due to quality of paper. No markings or inscriptions except for name and address of a previous owner on first blank. There is a bookplate of a previous owner on front pastedown and a small stamp of bookseller.Some fading of boards.
Published in 1917 and based on articles published in the Irish Times in 1916, it provides a fascinating insight into the 1916 Easter Rising. It contains a wealth of information including photographs, an official list of casualties, names of prisoners etc (see images for summary of contents).
A very scarce volume in very good condition and in an attractive and durable binding.

Thomas Campbell (1733–1795) was an Irish Protestant clergyman, best known as a travel writer and for his accounts of the circle of Samuel Johnson. Campbell was born at Glack in County Tyrone on 4 May 1733. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin (B.A. 1756, M.A. 1761), and took orders in 1761. He was curate of Clogher until 1772, when he was collated to the prebend of Tyholland, and in 1773 he was made chancellor of St Macartan's Cathedral, Clogher. He was a preacher. He died on 20 June 1795 in London.
