(circa1910).. 50 delicate hand coloured collotype plates on high quality stiff card each captioned in English, presented in Japanese embroidered silk covered boards with tassle ties, All edges gilt., patterned gilt endpapers.The hinges of each image have been professionally repaired with Japanese paper and wheat starch paste. Neat pencilled annotations lower corners, leaves clean and bright. 26 x 38cm. This beautiful album proved very popular and was reprinted a number of times, in some editions all of the plates are in colour, as is the case with this copy, and at other times the edition only shows some plates in colour and while the others are in black and white. The work also appears in editions both with and without 2 maps, later editions in Western bindings. Although his name does not appear in this album it seems highly likely that this album was published by Ogawa Kazumasa (1860-1929). Early 20th-century reprint of Utagawa's famous book on Japanese women's fashions originally published in 1802.Volume 1 only of the 2 volume set.With 25 full-color woodblock prints depicting 12 scenes over double pages with different classes of women, 23 pages of Japanese text.Includes woodcuts of noble courtiers under cherry blossom, samurai wives relaxing, concubines, merchant women, servants at bathhouse, dancers, laundress, nursemaid, etc.Condition: blue embossed paper boards scuffed and discolored, but interior clean and bright, woodcuts free of foxing. Traditional Yotsume Toji four-hole stab binding stitched on the right-margin. Toyokuni Utagawa (1769-1825), was a grand master ukiyo-e print designer and woodblock artist, known for his portraits of kabuki actors.

Rare set of 3 volumes of aromatic herbs from Kan'en Iwasaki's multi-volume botanical series Honzo Zufu: Hokusabu (Iconographia Plantarum), originally compiled from 1828 and later published in 92 volumes. This set of 3 volumes (volumes 6, 7, 8 in the series) includes 21 pages of text and indexes, and 100 color woodcuts of fragrant herbs or medicinal plants.Plants include angelica, peony, pepper, cardamom, nutmeg, turmeric, jasmine, tulip, rosemary, and many more. The plants were used in Chinese traditional medicine or kanpo.Condition: Washi paper covers scuffed, but interior clean and bright, color plates vivid and vibrant.Kan'en Iwasaki or Tsunemasa Iwasaki (1786–1842) was a Japanese botanist, zoologist and entomologist. His botanical studies were influenced by Johann Weinmann.

Bairei Kono (1844-1895) was a Japanese painter, book illustrator and art teacher famous for his botanicals and kacho-e (flower and bird) paintings.

Kaishien Gaden (Manual of the Mustard Seed Garden) is an Edo-Era Japanese edition of the very popular Chinese painting guide Jieziyuan Huazhaun by Wang Gai, first published in the Qing Dynasty in China (1701). The manual was reprinted many times from 1748 onwards in Japan.Four volumes from the Second Collection, with drawing instructions and examples for ume plums and kiku chrysanthemums. One volume only from the 8-volume series of guidebooks to the Enchuro School of ikebana or flower arrangement first published in Tokyo in 1807. 8 pages of text and 52 pages of woodcuts of ikebana featuring flowers in vases on tables, in hanging baskets, etc. Condition: Washi paper covers worn and fragile, binding resewn, the delicate woodcuts on thin washi paper mostly clean and bright. Ikebana was a very popular leisure activity in the Edo Era. The Enchuro-Ryu was a new school of ikebana that emerged in the early 19th century alongside the Senke-shinryu, Ko-ryu, Enshu-ryu, Yoken-ryu, Doku-ryu, Shofu-ryu, and many others to challenge the established Genji, Ikenobo and Senke schools.

The slipcase shows edgewear. Signs of wear on the interior.; A catalogue of fine examples of those Chinese porcelain wares known as Ko-sometsuke or literally 'old blue and white', destined to the Japanese market. In 161 pages, the book comprises 33 colour plates and a number of black and white images throughout the rest of the book, along with explanatory articles and captions. Showing pieces with a variety of shapes and decorative themes, this catalogue is a reference book for those who are interested in this intriguing and distinctive group of blue and white tea ceremony porcelain wares produced at the kilns of Kigndezhen, Jiangxi, during the declining decades of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644)..

Nims and Knight. Troy. New York. 1889. Calendar printed on 18 stiff sheets of card. (5.9 x 4.5 inches). Complete. Each leaf has a litho colour illustration depicting a scene from Japanese life, printed after fine water colours by J. Pauline Sunter. Twelve of the cards have the month dates printed to the side of the illustration. The lithography is by G. H Beuk & Co, New York. The cards are held together by two metal rings through punched holes at the top, and have a white silk cord, with tassles, threaded through. The cards are stiff white coated paper with silver edges. The front card has damage to the two holes and is now not attached but all others are firmly in place. The front cover is also a little dusty but generally the whole calendar is very good and features some very attractive illustrations. A rare item. No copies listed on Worldcat.

Illustrated endpapers. pp. 125 with 122 colour photographic plates of shoes designed by Takada between 1967 and 1990. Held her first exhibition at a Ginza art gallery in 1966 since when she became one of the most innovative and stylish shoe designers of the C20th. Unclipped jacket with light edgewear only. Uncommon.

Covers show shelf and handling wear with abrasion, light soiling, small creases, and worn corners.
